We are of Indian ethnicity from Australia and were traveling around South Island. We decided to have dinner at Green Bambo because we wanted to support ethnic food in western countries but what we experienced was absolute discrimination. We got to the place when it was only 1/4 full at dinner time (alarming!). The wait staff decided to clear our starters even before it was finished because the mains were ready - quoting that, thats what they do (which I found very rude). The mains were brought and it was a shadow of Vietanamese cuisine (I have been to Vietnam and had food 100 times better and there is even better Vietnamese cuisine in Australia. I believe Nelson residents are getting ripped off with regards to Vietnamese food. The waitress then decides to come around and clear our mains when we are half way through it - stating that the restaurant is closing - at 8.30pm!!! (When there were many other diners dining in the restaurant.) I found that absolutely discriminatory - especially when the entire time she (the waitress) was serving the table next to ours with a completely different attitude (I am not ashamed to add that these where caucasian people). My husband and I had a VERY BAD EXPERIENCE AT THIS RESTAURANT - NOT ONLY BEING DISCRIMINATED BUT THE FOOD WAS ATROCIOUS!!! My interaction with the owner of the place was ALMOST LAUGHABLE!!! When he tried to say that as the colour of the skin that we are (he was Asian as well) that even he has experienced discriminatory experience at services. THATS NOT MY POINT!!! As a paying customer at your restaurant, I DESERVE EQUAL RIGHTS AND EQUAL TREATMENT!!! I would STORNGLY advise the owner to EDUCATE their waitress on her issues on prejudice!!! OUR DINNER WAS COMPLETELY RUINED BY THIS EXPERIENCE AT...
Read moreCame for a weekend trip to Nelson and decided to book a table at Green Bamboo. Lucky we booked the place was packed. We really enjoyed the starters, I loved the crispy spring rolls and the chicken nibbles with the passionfruit and ginger sauce was nice and sweet. I loved the dipping sauce that came with the crispy spring rolls. We also ordered the Spicy beef Pho and the Rare Beef Pho, the broth is beautiful, I loved the spicy beef, could do with a little more ginger but the lemon and chilli on the side is great. I do feel there is a bucket load of noodles as we just couldn't eat not even half of them and that does take up alot of the bowl....less noodles and more of that amazing broth and it would have been 10/10...but still nice. Food goes beautiful with a nice cold beer which we really enjoyed. The young lady that served us was very sweet and friendly and the guy as well. Thank you for a...
Read moreVisiting Nelson and wanted to do a bit of restaurant hopping. Checked out the reviews and all seemed good. Once we were seated and started reading the menu, we quickly realised it was quite expensive for what it was $$$
We didn’t end up staying for long, ordered a couple of drinks and an entree - 5 x chicken nibbles for $15 (the cheap chicken nibbles you get from countdown presented on a plate of sauce) - just not what you expect for fine dining. We have been to Vietnamese restaurants before, paid half the price for same food and probably more authentic. Will admit the cocktail was delicious so definitely try those and they’re actually a decent price.
Nothing else similar to compare it to in Nelson which is probably what has brought in the...
