Free for locals and worth a donation . Very helpful staff. The layout has 3 distinct areas and it is important to up the stairs and lifts. The Cawthorn institute is celebrated up stairs. Us the National Geographic Photography exhibition. Amazing photos. The history of Nelson is down stairs. From geology to Maori and more recent history such as pottery. There is a gift shop and parking areas are close. Not far from the Suter art gallery so make a double visit.

The Nelson Provincial Museum offers a glimpse into local history and culture, with a nice selection of toys and captivating decor adding to its appeal. While the museum's size may be on the smaller side, it is worth a visit for its reasonably priced souvenirs and locally crafted art pieces that make for great mementos. The exhibits may not be expansive, but they are thoughtfully curated, providing insight into the region's heritage.

In the middle of town, this small museum was good value. I spent the hour there with the non local $5 entry. That's only cause the parking in the city had a 1 hr limit, could have stayed longer. Great history of Nelson, Iwi and English history, even some parts about animals. Receptionist was friendly too.

An interesting and informative Museum. I was taken on a historical journey with lots of little exhibits explaining the constantly changing face and culture of Nelson. I read and look at everything on display so I was entertained for well over 2 hours, and could have taken more time for contemplation if it were available to me.

The day I went, the embroiders guild had opened up an exhibition in the upstairs foyer which was rich in colour and texture. Some of the guild members were onsite and wonderful to chat with. Voting for my favourite piece was not easy, so much talent was on display.

Also, an exhibition of Women in Gaming. Technology has changed the way we interact and women have played a stronger part in that industry than most realise. Some very inspiring stories and advancements to see.

Overall, the museum is a great place for young and old, travellers and locals. Spend as much or little time as you like, come out feeling enriched. Don't miss the shop, it showcases local artists and...

In awe of the Nelson's tradition in seafaring and agriculture, this quaint but very well presented museum brings to life the history and development of this cohesive community from the inception of a changing tapestry beginning with Maori innovation to present day symbiosis of European cultural integration with a diverse heritage. Spiritually and for authentic curiosity reasons, I have experienced Nelson's charm as beautifully aligned with adventurous enthusiastic activity. The museum is a pause in time reflecting the depth, character and difficulties of the township enterprise which is a must see experience for all ages as this lovely museum gives a broad representation of the historical biography ingrained in this...

normally I don't like to go into museums, only because it makes me feel bored , getting sweaty , almost going faint and with a migraine to top it off. but when i've came to see around this museum , all of those feelings are now gone as I really enjoy this one , but also the one that's in wellington as well. I even love getting inspired by what the artists display , their art to help me to almost do the same art as them , but by my own ...
