Premium prices for less than premium food. Excellent, friendly service however. Meals: roti with chicken curry, steamed pork buns, curry laksa, hainanese chicken.
The roti is definitely not made fresh on site, instead of a flaky, crispy, multi-layered dipping treat you are served with a soggy, doughy mass. If the rotis are sourced elsewhere then the buns probably are too, nicely steamed but nothing special, you can get better at the yum cha place across the road. The laksa was bland, the fish cake and tofu had no flavour at all while the broth was a watery soup poured over thick noodles. The hainanese chicken was served covered in this thick, sweet sauce and on top of regular steamed vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower instead of a bed of bean sprouts. Strange, and definitely not how we know the dish to be. No hainanese rice or chicken broth to accompany the dish either, just plain white rice. This dish was not a savory delight but something more akin to a steamed chicken with BBQ sauce. The wait staff were pleasant and friendly which made it awkward after such a disappointing meal, of course we're not going to say we hated it, just take our money and we'll be on our way.

Read moreMVMR (MV), originally Sungei Wang (located opposite the Queensgate Bus Terminus until it moved to its current location years ago), offers a smallish menu of Malaysian cuisine. The cooking is quite average; the noodle dishes were very inconsistent when it came to portioning. The chicken curry was quite watery, good for roti perhaps but not as a curry in its own right - it lacked body (needed more rempah, chilli, aromatics).
Having dined regularly for years at Sungei Wang, MV's predecessor, one cannot eat here without feeling some nostalgia for SW's cuiaine which was decidely more authentic with robust M'sian flavours. Notwithstanding its history there's ample room for improvement for MV especially at their current pricing plans ($3.50 for a small bowl of rice?) and given that there are nearby, rival eateries offering better value.
Service is polite and fast. Understandably the manager will enquire out of courtesy as that is his role as maître d'. Overall we did enjoy our meal here and that perhaps is the litmus test, the thing that diners...

-Waitress was indifferent towards serving us, while she was all smiles serving the others, she had a straight face at our table and only responded in one word responses.
-Roti was good but could have been definitely better, it was slightly doughy in the center.
-The wantons barely had any filling in them, seemed like we were eating deep fried dough in oil.
-Waitress got my curry wrong, asked again and got the right one. I asked two members of staff how much the extra one would be, both confirmed couple of $$. It was charged $5+ at the end.
-The supervisor realised something was wrong and would not stop asking us if everything was alright which is why I am giving this 3...
