It was busy for 8 30am. Don't judge me for having a pie for breakfast! It's the kiwi thing to do, especially when the pies are THIS GOOD! The POTW was paua - full, creamy, tasty. All you could want. Was it a $15 pie? Yes, yes, it was!! The previous POTW was mac n cheese - seriously? 2 of my fave things! Another reason why Puku Pies is on my weekly rotation. The space is small - I like that. Alot. The vibe is as fresh as their playlist, and I can essily spend a leisurely hour after my pie enjoying the hum of the place. The cabinets are full, and the donuts and pastries look amazing. TBH, I haven't tried one myself, but wifey swears they are the business. Coffee is average - not my preferred bean, but it's made well and always served with a smile. DON'T drive past without stopping in. DO make time to enjoy the pies, the view, and the vibe. DON'T be surprised if you find yourself thinking about these pies and planning your next visit. Resistance is futile. DO leave a review because it's your duty to let everyone know how bloody awesome Puku Pies is!! Kei runga noa atu koutou ngā kaimahi, ngā ringa raupa o tēnei wharekai. See ya next week 🤪

The mince pie benchmark test - at first glance were off to a great start. The crust was perfectly formed and just screamed ā€œbite into meā€. Cutting it open revealed a delicious invitation of a thick hearty filling. No watery mince or gluey goop here! Unfortunately the taste test proved a little lacklustre. The pastry and filling were both on the bland side. The pastry was too thin for my liking, lacking the fluffy layers that adorn my favourite pies. And the filling, while generous, was definitely missing seasoning. Just a whack of salt and pepper would have beefed this up, if not some chilli or herb component to add some complexity. I wouldn’t write off Puku based on one pie - their Beef and JalapeƱo looks promising - but I hope they can add a bit more love into their basic staples in the future.

Today was my first visit to Puku Pies & Kai, though I’d heard about it from a friend before. The food was outstanding—the strawberry croissant was a highlight, loaded with rich, creamy goodness. Although I missed out on their pies this time, I’ll definitely be back for them on my next visit. I also arrived during happy hour (3–4 pm) when everything was half price. It’s great to have another eatery in the up-and-coming area of Lyall Bay, adding to the local charm. Despite some negative reviews, I feel these critiques miss the mark; it’s impossible for any place to cater perfectly to every taste without creating too much wastage.

Decent sized pies at a reasonable price. My family and I have tried five pies and three types of croissant and a date scone from their range so far, and we agree the quality is really good. The pies were cut up for each of us to sample. For me, I found the cheese in both the mince’n’chesse, and steak’n’chesse a little too strong and the flavour did repeat on me afterwards. I did enjoy the meat of both pies and finding lots of chunky steak pieces was good to see. The Lamb pie was succulent and was on par with the meat being somewhere close to the good old Sunday roast, and Beef Brisket pie is my favorite so far. The bacon and egg pie was fairly standard with the usual one whole egg and decent (but a little bit salty) bacon. The croissants were good and wasn’t just pain bread shaped like them, the fillings of pistachio in one and chocolate in another had a moose almost mock cream texture and taste which I’m not a great fan of. The other family members had the date scone and almond croissant and were happy with their choices. The pasty for the pies kept the pies together well, weren’t too messy and were fairly standard. Would go back to try the other offerings...

āļøāļøāļøāļøāļø 5 out of 5 stars — A True Gem in Lyall Bay!

Puku Pies is hands down one of the best local treasures in Lyall Bay — not just for their absolutely delicious pies (which are next-level good!) but for the people who make the experience so special.

Yolanda, Henry, and Eva are the heart and soul of this place. Every time we visit, they welcome us like family — with genuine smiles, warmth, and care that go far beyond customer service. They’ve created an atmosphere where everyone feels at home, and they’re always so thoughtful and attentive, especially with the kids. Whether it’s remembering our favourite flavours or going that extra mile to make sure everything’s perfect, their kindness and professionalism shine every single time.

The food is consistently top-notch — golden flaky pastry, generous fillings, and those perfect comforting flavours that make you instantly happy. But what really sets Puku Pies apart is the feeling of community and connection that Yolanda, Henry, and Eva bring to every visit.

Thank you for being such incredible people and for creating a space that always makes us feel welcome and cared for. Lyall Bay is lucky to...
