Huapai Tavern — Restaurant in Rodney

I’d give this place a zero if I could. I walked in today with my sons medical assistance dog, my son and my husband. I entered first and the place smelled like old cigarettes, stale alcohol and desperation. I turned to my husband to signal to him that maybe we should find somewhere less depressing but before I could do anything the harsh looking bar tender said to me “you can’t bring that in here”. I hoped to high heaven she was talking about the medical assistance dog rather than my disabled son. I calmly said “the dog is a medical assistance dog and under NZ law he is actually allowed in here. She stated that she didn’t care and he wasn’t allowed in. I said she was breaking the law. Have been to Huapai Tavern many times in past mainly for lunch. Took our dog there in the outside area on a good few occasions with no problem after reading it was dog friendly on the website. Dropped in the other day and this young officious barmaid told us we weren’t allowed to bring our dog. We said that we had taken our dog to the outside area in the past and as far as we were aware it was a dog friendly pub and the young barmaid said determinedly that we were wrong and that Huapai Tavern has NEVER allowed dogs. We decided to stop off at Huapai Tavern for lunch on our way home from a night away, as it being Our 3 year wedding anniversary. THE STAFF: A+++ Friendly welcome at entry, Awesome Service, comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Big ups to the Chef & helping hands Seafood Chowder/Garlic bread & Crumbed Scallop meal was absolutely filling and so tasty, loved it!
