Long Dog Cafe — Restaurant in South Island

A real nice cafe with magnificent view of the St. Clair beach and the ocean. It's located in the vacinity of the Salt water pool, so it's convenient for those who want coffee or lunch while waiting for their beloved ones finish their swimming. The staff are very friendly and the food are very nice both in the menu and the cabinet. This place can be quite popular due to its location especially on Sunday morning or in a hot summer day. They have all day menu such as Egg Benedict, Big breakkie and bagels. They also have assorted baked stuff such as Cinnamon rolls. The coffee and hot chocolates here are nice. One of a few places in Dunedin where I can actually taste the chocolate in the hot chocolate. I highly recommend this place if you are around St. Clair area. We were really unhappy with the service at Long Dog Café. We ordered two coffees and waited, but three other groups who arrived after us and ordered coffee, were served their drinks before us. When the first coffee came out, it was only lukewarm and the second one, which arrived about 10 minutes later, was lukewarm too.

We had travelled from Marlborough and were recommended this beautiful spot, so it was really disappointing to be let down by the experience. The café has a great reputation, but unfortunately, the service and quality didn’t live up to it...

You might be mistaken to think the Long Dog Cafe would be dog-friendly. Well, you would be wrong. When we arrived at the front door with our miniature schnauzer, a staff member rushed over and said, “You cannot come in with the dog.” My wife responded, “OK. Did you know Google has your cafe listed as dog-friendly?” The staff member replied, “We are a cafe, we are a cafe, no, we are a cafe.” An establishment's owner can decide who can enter, but this response came across as rude and unfriendly, not what I would expect from a service industry...
