We spent a lot of time (actually it was me who was over excited to be back to my Alma mater) going around the campus and particularly the buildings which I spent most time studying and hanging out with friends. The Registry Building and Commerce Building (St David too because I was shopping for souvenirs) were particularly memorable. When we were finally done and exhausted, we headed to my ex-flats in Castle St and Heriot Row + Baldwin Street (sighseeing while attempted to go up the world's steepest street as confirmed by Guinness Book of Record).
Next stop was Otago Peninsular to visit the famous Royal Albatross colony but before that we stopped by this award winning Vogel St Kitchen, one of Dunedin's popular destinations for breakfast and lunch. Sure enough, it was very packed and we somehow managed to get a table at the other end of this cafe.
Restoring and fitting out this once abandoned building took the owner 10 months but the end result was astounding. It has the chic industrial look to it. After all, this area is Dunedin's heritage warehouse precinct which is more than 120 years old. ◾brown sugar buttermilk waffles with vanilla bean mascapone, citrus rhubarb, and toasted hazelnuts ◾brownie ◾Savoury scone ◾soup of the day which happened to be mushroom soup which came with 2 piece of ciabatta toast and butter
Other options include woodfired pizza and woodfired sandwiches on top of their all day menu. Since we were not that hungry, we didn't order much and had to contend with the things that...
Read moreI came to Dunedin from Auckland for a holiday for NY. A friend recommended a place for breakfast on 31/12/23, and we ordered seafood chowder. The serving was generous with beautiful seafood, and we managed to finish two breads that came with it. We were so impressed that we decided to come back for brunch on 3/01/24. However, the service was very slow, and no one came to take our order. When my boyfriend approached the waitress, she said that she was on a break and asked us to wait for someone to serve us or order at the counter. We asked another waitress to take our order to ensure that we were ordering what we wanted (in addition to seafood chowder, of course). When they brought two plates of chowder, we realized that there wasn't much seafood at all. All we could taste was onions and some small pieces of seafood, calamari, and shrimps. The portion was so small that we couldn't even finish the second piece of bread they served with the dish.
For example, in Auckland, there's a cafe named Sno in central Newmarket where we usually eat seafood chowder for $27, but they serve it in a nice and generously-sized bowl with two breads.
Sadly, we won't be returning to this place, or perhaps they were simply out of stock of their ingredients. We're very unhappy with our experience today :( It’s overpriced Gave...
Read moreBooked this place for brunch on the recommendation of my Dunedinite cousin, and it was even better than she told me it would be. I needed a table of eleven and booked for 10:30am, but half of us ended up arriving just after 10am. I was anxious about the reception we might get from the staff but I needn't have - they were so welcoming, graceful and friendly even though the place was busy and we were clearly causing them extra work! The coffee was outstanding. The food we ordered from the kitchen was hot, generous, hearty and delicious. The cabinet food equally so! The cheese scones were enormous and really good. Everything got devoured. The staff were so accommodating and kind, checked in on us, came and took multiple coffee and food orders, as further members of our party dripped in, with patience and good humour. The decor is industrial warehouse but still warm, clean, cosy with a fire roaring in the centre and light and bright. We absolutely loved it and wished we had found it earlier. Thank you to the lovely staff there for making our final meal together a special and memorable one. We will definitely be back next time...
