Superb coffee, okay baked goods, bad service. Come here for the coffee.
Upon approaching the counter to give my order, I am met by a young man who does not say "hallo", but stares blankly into my eyes for 2 seconds before raising an eyebrow. I break the silence by asking for a cold brew and a cortado. He punches in the order and begins fetching the order without a word. I pay and he places my cold brew on the counter without a lid nor a comment.
I stand awkwardly waiting for my cortado as the nonverbal man begins taking the order of the man behind me. On the counter I spy my much-needed lid for my drink, sitting in a stack. Upon grabbing my lid, I am swiftly informed by the shrill barista making my cortado that I cannot take a lid from that stack, and must instead take from a lid from the stack right next to it, as that is the one for customers. I apologize for my grievous error and suggest informing customers of this system, perhaps with a sign of some kind. She pays my suggestion no heed and says something about hygiene. The tension is thick as she pours the milk in my cortado. She returns to the espresso machine without comment.
Now I'm sitting here on one of the couches, with both of my take-away drinks, drinking them here out of spite, and so I can write this. I definitely feel better after getting this out of my system, but I'm still...
Read moreI've been to Fuglen twice in my life, first time a few years ago in Universitetsgata and this time in Gamlebyen.
I remember from last time that I didn't like the coffee there, and unfortunately I didn't like the coffee this time either.
Maybe it's just the Norwegian roasting style, but the coffee (double shot latte & double shot cappuccino, my friend and I tasted each other's orders) was incredibly weak.
It's ok to have a lighter roast as long as you can actually taste the coffee, which in this case, we almost couldn't taste anything except the oat milk. It was bland and tasteless. The machine they use is a La Marzocco, I think, so the machine is not the problem. Is it the beans? The roast? The extraction? The barista? My preference? I don't know, but for me, you should be able to taste a double espresso in any latte, no matter the roast.
I have not tried the plain black coffee, nor tasted the drinks or food so I can't comment on that.
The venue had a very cool vibe inside, and the area and outside of the building was super cozy and charming! Warm, a little retro. So if you like this style of coffee, I recommend this place.
Unfortunately, it was so noisy inside due to lack of soundproofing that we left, but I saw from another Google review that they are aware of the problem so hopefully it will...
Read moreI really love the concept of the place, and I always try my best to support small businesses. I also appreciate that dogs are welcome and the great events they host. However, I wanted to share a couple of points that stood out to me during my recent visit:
Chai Latte Price and Options: I found the chai latte to be quite expensive (79 kr) for what was an okay-sized drink. The average price in the city tends to be around 50 kr. Additionally, I noticed there were no options to add cinnamon, honey, or other sweeteners, which would’ve enhanced the experience.
Temperature and Comfort: It was extremely cold inside, to the point where I had to keep my hat, gloves, and sweater on. Even with those layers, I had to look around for a blanket. I was still colder than walking outside. When I mentioned it, I was told it was due to the ventilation system, and there wasn’t much they could do about it. Given the winter temperatures in Oslo, I’d expect a warmer, more comfortable environment, especially when staying for a while.
The level of noise is quite high
I still love the idea and the vibe, but I just wanted to give this feedback to help improve the overall experience. I hope you take it into...
