Sigh, I dunno what to say. This is one of the best rated restaurants on the island, one of the most expensive, and the farthest from where we were staying ... but it ended up being the worst experience we had on the island. Located in the exclusive Shangri-La, we expected much more.
Since we were staying the month, we came on our monthsary for a special treat of fine dining. The ambiance would probably have been nice ... but it was ruined by a loud party that was going on somewhere in the hotel below. We could tell other diners were bothered as well. When you're paying 3-4 times more than your average resto, you expect the hotel to plan it's layout accordingly, so parties don't disturb diners, but I guess that wasn't the case here. Also, I'm not sure why it's not open earlier, I'm sure the views would be amazing, but alas it only opens after sunset.
If that was the only problem, I could let it slide as not terrible ... but the food was also having issues. The two appetizers we had were good actually. This calamari was fresh and scallops ceviche was really quite a delight in flavor combinations ... but the main course was totally off the mark. We got the Bouillabaisse, which is a french fish stew that I was excited to try in a place with catch of day fresh seafood like Boracay ... and it was just totally boring. The broth tasted like just a shellfish broth with nothing particularly french or even interesting at all. I mean, you look at a recipe for Bouillabaisse, and there's like 20 different ingredients, from aromatics to herbs ... and I couldn't taste any of that in there. The shellfish was all rubbery, overcooked, and unsalted. At least the fish itself was edible, but that was far from a saving grace. We had them take it back to fix it up, but it was not really salvengable. The garlic custinis that came with it, tasted almost stale, not very buttery, and like nothing that you get served in france. Even the side dishes were disappointing. We had a lobster Mac and Cheese that tasted little of lobster, not even that much of cheese, mostly just bland and creamy. The mushroom polenta was not very mushroomy, and also undersalted. Idk, was the chef on duty just allergic to salt or something?
At least the cocktails were good. Thumbs up for that, but not enough for what we spent. And needless to say, we did not stick around...
Read moreThe Shangri-La Boracay, shelters Breathtaking views, intimate ambiance and friendly staff at the Rima Mediterranean Treetop Dining. I won't post any negative impressions because I couldn't find any, maybe was mesmerized by the unique vantage-point the place has to offer. The place opens at 17:30, so you get to see the sunset any day of the year, gourmet food experience, so if you are looking for a bargain, don't go, and complain about how expensive it is. But if you want a unique, discrete, romantic and special evening, I think it is worth it. You can dine even if you are not a guest at the hotel, just book in advance, and make sure you get there when they open, at 5:30 PM so you can enjoy the perfect sunset. Would I go there...
Read moreThis place is fantastic. Quite a trip getting here, I must say. I actually had no idea it was in the Shangri-La hotel, so it was quite interesting going past all the guards and such. The hotel, of course is phenomenal, and the restaurant was superb. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it for the sunset, but the view was superb at night. I can’t remember the exact names of everything I ordered, but everything was unique and delicious. We asked the waitress to recommend a good wine that would compliment our meal, so everything was absolutely perfect. A key thing to note is that the hotel shuttle cut offs from the restaurant itself ends around 9 or 10. So if you’re staying at White Beach, it’s good...
