Restaurant Review: Tong Yang, Antipolo – A Disappointing Weekend Visit

Date & Time of Visit: Weekend lunch, recent visit.

Purpose of Visit: Casual dining experience to explore a highly-rated buffet in Antipolo.

Location & Accessibility: Tong Yang is located in a commercial mall complex in Antipolo, making it relatively easy to find using Google Maps or a navigation app. Public transportation access is fair, and while there is parking available, it can be quite busy on weekends.

Parking & Exterior Impressions: There appears to be limited mall parking, and finding a spot can be time-consuming during peak hours. The restaurant entrance is clean and features a modern wooden sign that gives off a contemporary yet welcoming vibe. Accessibility for those with disabilities seems fair, with no obvious steps at the entrance.

Interior & Atmosphere: The restaurant’s interior design leans toward a modern aesthetic with wooden accents and warm lighting. The space is fairly open, though the layout becomes cramped quickly when it gets busy. Noise levels can be quite high, with a bustling, almost chaotic atmosphere during peak lunch hours. The seating is adequate, though the table spacing is minimal. Ventilation is decent, but the strong food aromas can linger.

Service Quality: Staff were polite but seemed overwhelmed and understaffed during our visit. While the buffet is labeled ā€œunlimited,ā€ the reality is that most items are only available in limited portions and must be specifically requested — often resulting in long wait times. This defeats the purpose of a buffet and creates unnecessary friction in the dining experience. Staff responsiveness and speed were lacking.

Menu & Selection: The concept includes both hotpot and grill options with an extensive variety of ingredients. There’s a wide selection of seafood, meat cuts, fish balls, tofu varieties, and vegetables. However, despite the large selection, the actual availability of items was inconsistent. Several dishes were over-salted, and the overall food quality did not meet expectations.

Food Experience: The hotpot includes two broths — one spicy and one creamy/milky — but both lacked depth in flavor. Most ingredients, especially the seafood and meat, felt low in quality. The grill station offered pork and chicken slices, but again, the cuts were fatty and poorly seasoned. Despite the colorful presentation, the food was overly salty, and the freshness was questionable. It was difficult to enjoy a satisfying, balanced meal due to the heavy seasoning and inconsistent cooking quality.

Pricing & Value for Money: The meal cost approximately ₱900 per person, which is high given the overall experience. For what is marketed as an ā€œunlimitedā€ buffet, the controlled portions, average taste, and low ingredient quality made it feel overpriced. No additional service charges were noted, but the value simply wasn't there.

Final Verdict: Despite its popularity and high number of Google reviews in the Antipolo area, Tong Yang was a major disappointment. Expectations were high, but the reality fell far short in terms of both service and food quality. The controlled portions in an "unlimited" buffet concept and the lack of freshness were particularly...

Certainly! Here’s a positive review focusing on the quality of the food:

I recently dined at Tong Yang-Antipolo, and I was thoroughly impressed with the food. Each dish was crafted with care, showcasing a remarkable attention to detail and a commitment to quality ingredients. The flavors were well-balanced and vibrant, clearly reflecting the chef's expertise and passion for their craft.

The shabu-shabu stood out with its perfect seasoning and fresh ingredients, offering a delightful burst of flavor in every bite. Presentation was equally impressive, making the meal as visually appealing as it was delicious.

The variety on the menu was commendable, with options catering to various tastes and dietary preferences. Each dish I sampled was consistently excellent, and the portions were generous, providing great value for the price.

Overall, the food at Tong Yang-Antipolo exceeded my expectations, making it a must-visit for anyone who appreciates high-quality cuisine and a memorable dining experience.

MAR 2024 - surprise! They are asking customer to provide a rating... So here's what I can say... Over-all good experience, the place is not crowded, and it was a goood timing considering it's a weekend. We arrived there without reservations luckily we don't have to wait long... Food I like... tempura, stir-fried vegetables, shrimps, squid, chicken kalbi, lots of meat choices. Fruits are also available and few desserts (including ice cream). There's a round cake with a missing slice but it is labelled for display only... I wish there's more dessert option. What I like is I can combine things... Tried the root beer float and also created beef enoki. You just have to be creative... When in Antipolo you might want to try it out. PS. got a Senior Citizen with 20% off but the net price 838 is just the same as the weekend price.... Hmmm it is really discounted? Tsk tsk tsk... How's your experience?
