Yanyu Music Restaurant & Bar — Restaurant in Poznan

First off, I am grateful there was no music playing last night when I went. I generally dislike music (especially loud pop music) in restaurants. But that's just me. Some people love it. Some people love the restaurant Orzo. I am glad they can have what they like: mediocre food in an atmosphere where you have to shout at the person next to you. Now for the real review. I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH THE PERSON WHO WROTE THAT THIS IS THE BEST CHINESE RESTAURANT IN POZNAŃ. I would go further: this is the ONLY Chinese restaurant in Poznań. The location has been home to various Chinese restaurants over a span of several years -- Rick's, Made in China (which I think were the same place under different names), and now Yan Yu; and each time it has been the best Chinese restaurant in Poznań, but this is the best of the best (so far, at least). Astonishingly, it will stand up to the best Szechuanese restaurants in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, London, and Berlin -- and all those cities have good Szechuanese restaurants (and, yes, I have eaten in outstanding examples in all those cities. I am a Chinese, particularly a Szechuanese, restaurant junky. But let's get specific for a moment. "Chinese" is too big a category. China is a very big and various country, comprising many climates and cultures. Each province (and often within a province) has it own style of cooking, and they can be very different from the styles of other provinces. In Gansu they eat a lot of mutton and lamb. In Szechuan not so much. There is no high-quality universal "Chinese restaurant," and this is not one. This is essentially a very good Szechuanese restaurant, which means it serves the intensely flavoured, very spicy, often pretty oily food of one of China's western provinces. If you are looking for the subtle flavours and delicate textures of Cantonese food, this place will disappoint you. But if you like truly in-your-face, burn your mouth, Chinese Food, then this is for you. (I would add that the woman who complained about the spareribs just didn't get it.) I went with a friend at 10 pm on a Friday night. There was only one other table in the place, and they were having Hot Pot. If you go with four or more people, I recommend trying Hot Pot -- it's a great conversation starter and fun for a group. However, since you basically cook your own food, it is not a good way to find out what the kitchen can do. The service, by young Polish people all of whom spoke good English, was helpful, prompt, and knew a lot about the menu (which is not always the case). It's not really that hard to give good service when a restaurant isn't crowded, so I have no idea what things are like when the place is full. If you want a real treat at the end of your meal, have a Chinese vodka -- note that while nearly all Polish vodkas are 40% alcohol, the Chinese vodka available by the glass at Yan Yu (they have more than one, but normally only one is available by the glass) is 56% alcohol. Yanyu is absolutely my favorite restaurant in Poznań, and I order from here almost every week. Today I had an issue with my order, but the team handled it in a very quick, friendly, and responsible way, which once again showed me how much they care about their customers. The food here is truly authentic Asian/Chinese cuisine, and the quality has always been consistent, whether dining in or ordering delivery. What impresses me the most is their service team. The staff always listen carefully to my needs, adjust the dishes to my taste and preferences, and treat every guest with genuine care. I am confused how to rate this place. The food which I ordered was good, just tofu. Another food which my friend ordered (pork bones) was terrible. My friend struggled to eat it and she almost broke her teeth while eating. Soup was okay, quite authentic. But I think the food is overpriced for such quality, could be a bit cheaper. Service was also fine, but the place is not cosy itself. We had to ask for chopsticks. Also a group of people were just coming in and out of the restaurant all the time.
