Food/drinks: Vegetarian francesinha was good. The sausage and burger were tasty. The sauce was not the best I’ve tasted in regards to vegetarian francesinhas. However my friends that had the normal one loved their sauce. The water was filtered from the tap (which they told us beforehand) - but the taste was not nice, in contrary to other tap waters I’ve drank in other places. And they didn’t have bottled water. 1L was 2€. My friend asked for a cider that cost 4,6€ so be attentive of the drinks you order Service: All the staff was very kind and attentive Atmosphere: was a busy day so it’s difficult to make a proper evaluation

I've been going to Alicarius in Aveiro for years, and it never disappoints! I visited again this week with a couple of friends, and the experience was just as great as always. The food is consistently fresh, with generous portions that leave you satisfied. The service is attentive and friendly, and the inside of the restaurant has a warm, cozy vibe with lovely, on-theme decor. Their "Francesinha"—hands down the best in town! If you're ever in Aveiro and craving one, this is the place to go

Local friends have been talking about eating "little French girls" and so I had to try it when I came over to visit. Got brought here for dinner on the first night and it did not disappoint. The francesinhas were fantastic, just the thing you want to eat after several hours of travelling! If you don't have a local with you to tell you this, let me be the one to guide you - definitely let the fries soak in the sauce for a bit, it's a game changer!

Edit in response to Alicarius,

Your response is disappointing and deeply unprofessional.

I have twice in my life ended up in intensive care due to my allergy. Your comment about me leaving the restaurant with no apparent allergy symptoms and having not eaten my order shows your sheer lack of understanding. I noticed it had egg because it only takes a bite to get symptoms, if I had indeed continued eating I would have ended up in hospital. Just for your information we also stopped on the motorway so I could vomit.

We made it absolutely clear multiple times that this was a serious allergy, not a preference, and even asked your staff to check with the chef. I also asked about every single ingredient, including the bread, which your staff insisted did not contain egg. This was later proven false when your allergy menu finally confirmed that it did.

To suggest this was a communication issue is completely unacceptable. At my table there were five native Portuguese speakers, including myself, and it was made crystal clear to your staff that this was an allergy, not a preference.

This is not a misunderstanding or poor communication on my part, it is a failure of your staff to follow food safety protocols. In Portugal, restaurants are legally obliged to provide accurate allergen information, and it is not acceptable to dismiss this as confusion or to blame the customer.

Your attempt to minimise the seriousness of this incident by referring to food waste and implying that I am a difficult customer is offensive. The reality is that if I had trusted your staff’s repeated assurances and eaten more, I could have ended up in hospital.

You say no one wants to hurt you, but negligence is precisely how people get hurt. Your duty is to protect your customers, not to attack them when they raise a legitimate and life-threatening concern.

We have already written this in the Livro de Reclamações, and it will now be followed up by the authorities.

Original review:

I am completely shocked at how my allergy was treated last night. It’s NOT an intolerance it is an ALLERGY for which I carry 2 EpiPens for! This time you were lucky you got someone who detects it quickly, next time you may not be so lucky.

What happened: I asked about EVERY ingredient in the food I ordered, including the bread and was ASSURED there was no egg, including going to ask the chef!!

Then of course I felt sick, the waiters still insisted multiple times there was no egg at all but then one fell in saying they couldn’t confirm the bread had no egg because it came from a bakery. If that wasn’t enough, the last kick in the teeth, was they then they went to check the allergy menu which indicated there is egg in the bread.

If i didn’t follow my gut and stopped eating and listened to the waiters insisting no egg - I would have ended up in hospital.

I can’t comprehend the sheer carelessness of these people. You’re going to kill someone one day.

I will be writing in the ‘Livro de...

Vira-me as costas e vai embora. Restos?...

We arrived at 8:30pm. There were plenty of open tables, but they would not seat us for drinks.

[update] The establishment has responded asking for more details, but I don't know how to respond to that, so I am editing the original review. I cannot provide more details because there is no more to tell. We arrived at 8:30pm. There were plenty of open tables. We asked for a table for two and they said no. I asked why. They said sorry. I'm not one to make a scene and I don't want to force myself into a place I'm not welcome, so I didn't press the issue and we left. I have my guesses as to why we weren't welcome, but because they did not wish to provide an explanation to me and I did not wish to press the issue, I can only guess why they would...
