Espinho is a fisherman's village at the seaside of the Atlantic,, South from Porto. Eating fresh fish is the key experience here, and finding the right place is the challenge. The more they speak English here, the more you are away from the authentic experience. I will let you all know where I want to go if I got further in my lessons speaking the Portuguese language, which is truly beautiful!. After a walk along the beach and a study on Google Maps where to find fish restaurants, I ended up at Casa Locas. I would never wanted to have missed this experience. You are in the middle of Portugal with Portuguese people and Portuguese products and habits. I asked my friendly Portuguese speaking host to bring me what he recommended. Accordingly, I was served an authentic "bouillabaisse" like soup which was very tasty! In meantime, I was served a vinho verde in a style that one can hardly explain in writing. From a caraf characterizing the fine mousse. I was shown the fresh fish that was to be prepared for me. After about 15 minutes it was served on the table and I had a great meal among locals around me in a full restaurant. Why not 5 stars instead of 4? Hard to say. Restaurants serve a role withing a local community with a lovely local lifestyle that an outsider must not rate as a customer experience. A message to the owner: I had a great experience and I sincerely thank you for welcoming me in, as well your establishment, as well the social...
Read moreWe got here a little later in the evening for dinner (which is relative, the locals seem to eat much later than us tourists) but the restaurant was hopping! We were seated in the back and had the room to ourselves. The waiter was a delight! We asked for menus and he just shook his head, "we have fish." Ok, but what about.... another head shake, "no, we have fish. And you should try the fish soup too." Never one to pass up the recommendation of the waitstaff, we followed him to the fish case and listened as he explained the types that they'd bought off the boat that day. Can I tell you, he was not wrong! The fish was a delight! We had the sardines (everyone visiting Portugal should try the sardines) and a whitefish which were grilled to perfection. Let's talk about the fish soup, though, because he pushed it pretty hard. We'd already had "Espinho's best Fish Soup" earlier in the week so I was not so interested. His insistence however, made us concede to get at least one bowl (my partner had the salad). Wow. I officially claim THIS the best place to get the fish soup. It was tremendous!!! Put this location into your gps and go. Make sure to get...
Read moreThis restaurant in Espinho is a 'real find'! An amazing fish soup which is a must have when you come here for lunch or dinner. It may not be the best fish soup I've ever had but it is surely second to none. All the fish is very well selected and fresh. Extremelly well cooked either grilled, fried or in the pot. Excelent choices for desserts. And at the end, when you get the bill and you look at it, you will realize, for sure, the real bargain you had coming...
