Pé na Areia — Restaurant in Figueira da Foz

Pe na Areia has a beautiful view right on the beach, and the atmosphere is just what you’d want for a relaxing meal by the sea. The local wine was very good, and overall the setting makes it a place worth visiting.

That said, there’s one thing that left me with a sour impression. As soon as you sit down, they bring a plate with olives, cheese, fish marmalade, bread, and butter. It looks like a house welcome dish, but only later when you see the menu do you realize it’s charged by that time, you’ve probably already started eating. I don’t like to feel tricked or made to look like an idiot, and this practice unfortunately took away from the otherwise great experience.

If you go, enjoy the view, the wine, and the atmosphere…but be aware of the “starter” they place on the table.

It’s disappointing when a restaurant uses tricks instead of transparency. The starters were served without being mentioned as paid items…small portions presented with a big smile, as if they were complimentary. Later, you realize they’re on the menu and added to the bill.

If these items are already on the menu, why not let customers order them willingly? That would show honesty, not manipulation. The owner’s sarcastic reply only confirms the attitude.

This isn’t about the few euros, it’s about respect. A small trick like this leaves a lasting bad impression. For anyone visiting: if you don’t want these items, simply say “No, thank you” when they bring them, or you’ll find them on your bill.

Tras pasar la mañana en la playa fuimos a comer algo a este restaurante/chiringuito. Nada más sentarnos vino el dueño del lugar al ataque, nos enseñó la carta pero lo único que dijo fue que ellos trabajaban con pescados y mariscos, casi obligándonos a pedir algo de eso cuando en la carta había mucha más variedad (obviamente el dueño quería que nos sintiésemos obligados a pedir lo más caro). Después de eso, otro camarero vino a la mesa con una tabla con queso, aceitunas, pan y una especie de “ensaladilla rusa” y casi sin preguntar nos la puso en la mesa, no daba opción a decir que no. Ahí ya nos fuimos dando cuenta de por dónde iban los tiros, ya que luego nos cobrarían todo. Además, nos puso las copas de vino y nos dijo a ver “qué vino tomaríamos”. No nos dejamos llevar y pedimos agua. Tampoco caímos en la trampa del pescado y decidimos pedir un arroz de 2 personas para 3 (con los aperitivos ya nos habíamos llenado un poco). Parecía que la cosa no podía ir a peor pero si. Tras una hora de reloj (sin exagerar), todavía no habían traído el arroz. Le dijimos a uno de los camareros y se puso a la defensiva. En vez de pedir perdón, dijo que era nuestra culpa por haber llegado a las 3 de la tarde y que el arroz tardaba mucho en hacerse (sabemos que el arroz se hace a fuego lento pero más de una hora es algo excesivo). Estuvimos a punto de levantarnos e irnos pero pasados 10 minutos más por fin lo trajeron, poniéndose a la defensiva otra vez, diciendo que había más mesas que atender y que no eran horas para comer (si saben que no van a ser capaces de cumplir con el servicio mejor que no acepten más comensales). El arroz estaba rico y tenía bastante marisco, las cosas como son. Comimos, pagamos y nos fuimos. Salimos a unos 30€ por persona, al final no tanto, pero si llegamos a dejarnos llevar por las sugerencias del camarero, habríamos pagado más del doble y la atención habría sido igual de mala. The prices are extremely expensive for the reality of the restaurant and quality!

The restaurant is cozy and in a very nice setting, next to the beach... However, we have to take into account that we are in Figueira da Foz and not in NY or Australia.

Almost 200€ for a fish is ridiculous! Paying more than 60€ per person to have grilled fish in Figueira is insane. The fish was very tasty, indeed. But not worth the money at all. Additionally, you should definitely be more transparent with prices and have them outside too.
