Beer Garden restaurant — Restaurant in Funchal

If I could I would give 0 stars. I visited this restaurant in July 2025, we made a reservation for 6 people and arrived there on time- when we arrived one lady greeted us as we came in, I told her we had a reservation for 6 and when I said this there was a man that obviously worked there and indicated to her and us that our table was upstairs. We sat down and had a look through the menu but we already had an idea of what we were going to order- he (the men that told us where our table was going to be) came around and asked us if we wanted to order drinks, we did and he shortly after came for the food order. I was the one who we had all agreed that was going to order so everyone else had previously told me what they wanted, I started ordering and as I tell him about he first two orders (two large picados de vaca) I waited for him to note this down and then slowly moved to another order as I though he had written it down (he remained quite so I assumed I could carry on) I then tell him about the 3rd order (picado de espada) to which he interrupts me by saying: "stop, stop, stop, stop,stop! Are you listening to me??" I obviously look up to him angrily staring at me and sticking his arm/hand to me showing me to stop with his hand too! I was appalled at him and could not understand what I had done wrong for him to be speaking to me that way! So condescending and intimidating...

I wait for him to tell me what was wrong and he says he that "two large picados de vaca" are way too much and he thinks that we should order two small ones or just one large one. I was speechless so I ask the people who were the ones that were going to eat what they would like? They agree that they want the large as they are very hungry! So I repeat this to him and he looks absolutely shocked. I then slowly proceed the rest of the order, order comes and while he is serving the food to us he seems annoyed that we have 2 children that are enjoying and having a good time! (They were not misbehaving) they were simply having a lovely time and laughing, smiling, taking, etc... he was really not happy with this and rather seemed to be very uncomfortable and annoyed! He then constantly stared at us, specially whiled we ate and at the end took our plate away whilst he pulled faces which looked ridiculous since we were paying for a service and he was not doing us any favour. I felt humiliated initially but was never rude back to him at any point! Thought the best thing is to just leave him with a review! Also... the food wasn't that much...

I loved the food very much! I think these are quite authentic dishes, and it is very well frequented by locals. We visited twice, once we had sandwiches with traditional bread (bolo do caco), super thin beef, salad and cheese. Super basic, but one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. The bread was fantastic and the meat super juicy and savory. Also very good: the House sauce. Served either with fries or with the picado, they also offer (which is also amazing, I tasted it). On the second time, we had grilled squid, steamed octopus and a salad. Both dishes were again just perfect. The octopus was super tender and tasted perfect and the sauce sayory. The squid was of the same quality, but prepared differenty. Also very very good. Please note: the onions on the lower plate (octopus) belong to the salad, not to the dish) Parking there can be a bit adventurous, but the food and the super friendly service is more...

We had just finished a hike and were extremely thirsty and hungry. A local directed us to the Beer Garden, so we decided to give it a try.

Upon arrival, we had to wait in a queue and ordered a glass of wine while waiting — which never arrived. Later, another waiter started pouring a beer for my friend and told us it would be brought to the table, but that also never happened.

When we finally got to our table, we ordered another round of drinks which took an unusually long time to arrive. We shared the pichado, which was nice, but when we tried to order more drinks, they never came either.

Each time we tried to get a waiter’s attention, they used dismissive hand gestures and signaled for us to wait, yet never returned.

Either the establishment is not welcoming to tourists or the staff are severely overworked. Either way, it was a disappointing experience after such a beautiful hike. Avoid this...
