Restaurante Barra Azul — Restaurant in Funchal

A REAL 5 star restaurant! Don't let the exterior fool you! This might just be the best restaurant in all of Madeira. I haven't tried them all, but after my third visit I have tried many. Among them a three course meal in the Madeira Casino Restaurant, that wasn't even close to what you get at Barra Azul. You don't find Barra Azul in regular travel guides, but we got tipped off by a travel guide who have lived in Funchal for over 20 years. Menu variation: (Almost) all you could wish for! Food: Absolutely first class! Staff: Full of humor, efficient and easy going. Value for money: You will be surprised about how little you have to spend, compared to what you get! Environment: Very simple, local atmosphere and a lot of fresh air from the beach, only 20 meters away. If you can stand the very simple furniture, parking along the road leading down to the beach (or get a Taxi) and the sometimes heavy winds from the ocean, this is definitely a restaurant you...

Located on the beach, friendly staff, laid back atmosphere with a very good value for your money. Located near parking that is paid but reasonable and on the beach walkway. We had the mix of beef and chicken with fries and brown sauce (the one we have all tasted all over) food was good, chicken a bit too well grilled for my ideal taste but hey everyone is a bit different. Staff approach more than make up for it. I suggest to avoid the house red wine if you want something dry or sweet - this one is neither but not a show stopper if you know in advance - I'm no connoisseur so might be just me. Our friends had beef sandwiches in a roll and were quite satisfied. Ice cream and espresso were good too ... Overall enjoyable and we will be back to try...

I am always surprised about all these 4.9 stars places in Madeira that do not deserve it all, while places like this are totally underrated in my opinion. This place is in my opinion is the most authentic place in Praia Formosa. They serve fresh fish (ask for what is fresh). Service might not always be friendly friendly but authentic! Music has room for improvement, but the view is still amazing. If you like spicy and squid try the devil squid! Also you can have a nice portion of fish soup here with lots of vegetables and a bit of fresh fish at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended. This place does not do dual pricing for foreigners...
