Pivovar U Medveďa — Restaurant in Humenné

Mixed feelings about this one: I feel they may be victims of their own success. I first visited in spring 23 and had the burger in the picture, which was great value and delicious, to the point where I raved to all my students about it.

Since then, I've had two more burgers: the first was equally delicious, the most recent (cca 2 months ago) did not taste great. I put it down to an off day, but am now slightly wary.

I've also had 2 pizzas, both of which were OK. The barbecue one with caramelised onions sounded great, but was rather sweet, and the chorizo one (last weekend) was just fine, but a bit lacking in flavour. I asked for garlic 'okraj' (edge) on that one, but didn't get it.

The other people I've been with have had schnitzels (large, well-cooked and well seasoned) and pirohy (fine). The side dishes are also generous. The soups (we've had garlic and chicken broth) are nothing special. So the food is good-to-great with just one weird burger in maybe 5-6 visits of 5+ people.

The atmosphere is ok, but it can be a little noisy when it's full. There's plenty of seating, inside and outside, and clean toilets with soap. The staff are generally very pleasant.

We have had several problems with the service, though: the missing garlic on my pizza, a 45-minute wait, one argumentative waitress having a bad day, half the guests' mains turning up before the other half's soups. Individually, none of these are deal-breakers, and a second member of staff apologised profusely for her colleague's argumentative approach. But together, they start to create an impression of a staff which is maybe overstretched at times?

I want to like this place, as I'm very fond of Humenné and I've had some delicious burgers. It's great for the price, but needs to be a bit more...

To be avoided! We tried this place for dinner. Very slow service. My first selection for dinner was not available, my second selection was not available, so I tried a third order. They never even brought me some cutlery, and when my friends empty plates were taken a full hour after the first order I still had no dinner. And I never got it there! So I had to get myself a sandwich at the nearby OMV gas station. Finally the prices we were charged were higher than on the menu too! Stay away...

10 proof beer is excellent, my favorite!👍 Probably best beer the city and Humenne region. It’s coming from small brewery, which is always a BIG PLUS + in my book! They should seriously start developing their food with this beer like gulash, grilled specialties and so on. It should be in the centre of their food and marketing. Food is OK in general, it really depends what you order but overall it’s slightly above Slovak average. In summary an experience worth taking in...
