(Not the most authentic, but still positively interesting taste) Craving for some Asian food and here I am... Thai food! The reviews look really good and somehow I am confident of their food. First, I ordered my tom yam mushroom soup at R59 (actually the first was my Carling Black label beer) and it was nice, with the expected hot and sour. Is that authentic... Yes and no. Because the soup was likely made from the tom yam paste that can be found in most asian or Thai supermarkets, instead of the individual tom yam ingredients boiled into one. I can totally understand their constraints in getting those ingredients and thus, this is more than enough to satisfy my craving for a bowl of hot soup. Theres button mushrooms, cauliflower, brocolli, carrot shreds and cabbage, which made it soup good for most vegetarian. And then my "Red curry like basil" chicken, which comes with rice! (R89) I have never tasted or even heard of this dish, so it's worth a try based on the pic! And it didn't fail me... The rice was Abit clumpy but it seems to have some kind of fried rice with some flavours in it. Not too bad... Then the eggs omelettes were good as well... Not quite those u would get in Thailand, but it's still good, just a tad salty. And then my chicken... I am still puzzles what style of chicken was that? It has chilli peppers on it, taste Abit sweet, mildly spicy and made me feel like eating KFC! It's slightly crispy as well which made it good to bite on. I can imagine eating that while drinking beer and watching football! I also requested for additional chilli padi, which by now I realise Cape town's version taste more like green/red pepper 🫑 than a chilli 🌶️. I asked for some soya sauce as well. Despite of the waitress obliging my few requests, she doesn't seem to be the friendliest, but it's alright I guess! She did took my bowl of 80q finished tom yam soup away while I wasn't concentrating... Sad... Overall, this was a good meal. An 8.5 in south African context! For better Thai food, go to Thailand! (Just changed my review from a 4 to 5 stars as I feel really full and satisfied. That's the most impt for a hungry man, isn't it... BUT I reverted back to a 4 stars, as i just saw they included a 15% service tax in the bill, which hmmm.... I would have been fine with that, if there was more of a smile of some sorts in...
Read moreChoosing a restaurant to eat at in the Cape Town CBD can be quite daunting. Sometimes making a decision can take so much time that before you know it it's curfew. We decided to venture around Heritage Square, and popped into the old kid on the block, Simply Asia. If you haven't yet tried Sushi (or Asian food) this is where you'll acquire your learner wings into eating Asian food. It's simple, tasty, unpretentious and constant. The sushi rice was firm and held together when dipped. Not heavy or stodgy. There's a good ratio of rice and fillings. Guaranteed you won't get smotherings mayo here. The wasabi and ginger are served on the platters but easy enough for you to scoop your own serving. If you haven't yet got the hang of chopsticks this is definitely the place for you. No side stares here.... There's cutlery on the table!
We tried the: Salmon Fashion Boost, salmon and avo fashioned into a sandwich. Hot Tempura Prawn Roll, an old favorite. Hot Rock and Roll, the teriyaki and seven spices takes this to another level. Inari Spicy Prawn, rice and salmon filled in soya bean curd. Lemon Stir Fry Rice with Prawn, a new dish on the menu with very distinctive tastes of lemon and soy. Definitely a must try if like us you've eaten your way through the menu and looking for new taste sensations. Spinach Dumpling, not a dumpling at all; more like a spinach toast. The highlight and unexpected delight of our meal. These dumplings were a surprise... Fried but not oily. Light and crispy on the outside. Soft on the inside. Oh so comforting.
Simply Asia doesn't require the heels you'd normally don when traipsing Heritage Square. It's like coming...
Read moreWe had a wonderful dining experience at Simply Asia Heritage Square, a cozy Thai restaurant in the heart of Cape Town. The restaurant has a warm and inviting atmosphere. The menu offers a variety of dishes, from soups and salads to noodles and curries, but I was especially impressed by the extensive selection of duck entrees. I ordered the roasted duck with flavored soysauce, which was tender, juicy and flavorful. The sauce was sweet and tangy, complementing the duck perfectly. The portion was generous and satisfying, served with jasmine rice and stir-fried vegetables. We also had steamed chicken and prawn dumplings, Thai Spiced Ramen with duck and Tom Yum soup with duck. The service was excellent, thanks to our friendly and attentive waitress named Promise. She greeted us with a smile, took our orders promptly and checked on us regularly. She also gave us some helpful recommendations on what to order and how spicy we wanted our food. She made us feel welcome and comfortable throughout our meal. I highly recommend Simply Asia Heritage Square to anyone looking for a delicious and affordable Thai meal in Cape Town. It is definitely one of the best Asian restaurants in the city, with great food, great service and great ambiance. I can’t wait to go back and try more dishes...
