I called Base of African Restaurant on long street looking for Ethiopian food and they said they have closed down and redirected me to wakanda as their newly opened restaurant that serves the same food. To my surprise they do not. This is strictly a Nigerian food restaurant. Which was not so much of a train smash because I equally enjoy Nigerian food. However, this restaurant was beyond disappointing on all fronts. The service was the worst j have ever experienced. One waitress started helping us then ditched us and another waiter took on who was very slow. The restaurant seemed to be prioritising ubereats orders and not the people sitting in the restaurant. They had majority of the things not available on the menu. After all 6 of us ordered, one meal was brought at a time, I received mine first. By the time I was done eating the next only the second meal came to the table and it went on like that until the 5th person. By the time it got to the 6th person, the waiter had forgotten what the person ordered even though the waiter had written all the orders down. What poor service. I love supporting African businesses as a fellow African but it’s such a shame when treated so poorly at such establishments. The food was below average and we honestly only ate because we were starving...
Read moreI was very underwhelmed by this place, especially after reading the high ratings on Google. I should have noticed the red flags because most of the people rating five star reviews have only submitted one or two reviews before so they’re probably not real customers. I was planning to dine in, but when I got there, there was no one in the restaurant except a few delivery drivers waiting to pick up their orders. The atmosphere was not that comfortable so I decided to take my food to go. I got chicken and rice dish. The flavor was fine, but it tasted extremely overdone and maybe a few days old. For example, the chicken was rock solid and warm on the outside but cold on the inside, so it had clearly been reheated. Not a great experience, I don’t recommend...
Read moreI was so looking forward to the umleqwa and steamed bread on special on a Sunday. Dissaponted is not even the word. From the wait time and not being told how long we should expect to wait to the food itself.
They call themselves an African restuarant but only sell Nigerian cuisine. The umleqwa is only a Sunday special. Anyway we were looking forward to this nostalgic meal. Only to be met with steamed bread that is not cooked through and umleqwa that looks like it's been mixed with tripe. And tastes like it too. For R100 it's just not worth it.
If you are going to make South African cuisine at least be serious about it or get locals who can make it well.
Even if i want Nigerian food I think this is the last place I...
