My family and I are regular customers at Ocean basket. On 04 July 2023 we went to Ocean Basket at Emperors palace. We were 5 people as I had invited my in-laws to the franchise boasting about how amazing the food was. We were seated and everything seemed to be going great. Than the wheels started to fall off. The first meal arrived which was the platter for one. Then 2 other meals arrived 23 minutes later which was the fish and chips which my in-laws ordered. Then my daughters fish bites came approx 15 minutes later. By this time none of the drinks had arrived yet. Then as unbelievable as this sounds the salad arrived after all the meals had finally been consumed. When we asked the manager what was going and explained to him what had happened he said he would go and find out and sent the waiter back to the table to apologize. The waiter said the receipt printer that sends the order to the kitchen wasnt working properly and the orders were delayed. Our bill was close on R1000 and we never saw the manager again after we complained. This is not what we have grown to expect from one of South Africas oldest and well known franchises. No attempt was made to remedy the issues that we experienced and felt insulted and short changed after the outing.

Update: over the weekend, we went back to Ocean Basket Emperors Palace, and based on the experience I am updating my review. Again, the service was amazing, our waiter, Peter, was just the sweetest gentleman and we really enjoyed his warm smile and excellent service. We ordered the Panko prawn starter, it was delicious, but the size of the prawns were inconsistent, not a big deal though. For mains, we ordered the platter for 2 with crispy chips. Everything was perfect, chips crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, food well seasoned. Honestly chalk and cheese from our previous experience. Thank you Patience and Mthulisi! I recently visited Ocean Basket Emperors Palace with my family. The staff were welcoming and the service good, however, the food… If there was an option to rate it 0, I would. Firstly, the portion sizes are much smaller than they used to be, secondly, the food was bland and had no flavour. Both myself and my son had calamari, it honestly was not seasoned at all. The rice was a pile of light yellow mush and again had absolutely no seasoning. Lastly, they do jot accept American Express.

This has been my worst experience at an Ocean Basket. None of the waiters were cleaning up completed or empty dishes and glasses on all tables not mine only. When I asked the manager about this he stated firstly they don't want to disturb the patrons even though the waiters would deliver something to those particular tables and walk away with an empty tray instead of picking up something to clear up. He second excuse was that they where understaffed which is understandable but why would you go to a table to take a new order or drop something and go back empty handed. This happened through my entire 2 hr sitting and happened at most of the tables. A birthday party moved to their unused seats because of the uncleared tables so they could eat. This is poor service. I'm not expecting to be served like at a fine dinning restaurant but some semblance of understanding of a restaurant would have been great. (16th April at 7pm)

We went to Ocean Basket at Emperors Palace on Saturday 14 May 2016. In my life I have never experience such bad service and food as that day. • 1st our waiter only came to us 3 time, 1st to take the order, 2nd to bring the food and 3rd to take the plates and bring the bill. Not once did she come and ask if all was still fine so that we could tell her that the food is not up to standard.

• 2nd the food was so disgusting; we ordered 2x platters for one, one with chips and the other with a salad. The chips tasted like it was headed up in a microwave, there was only a small amount of squids not even a spoon full, the calamari tubs was a funny pale color and tasted like rubber it was not fried with the spices as it is always done, when you bite in to the mussels water was coming out of it, the prawns and fish that came with it was fine but also not like it usually is, it was by far the worst tasting food I have ever tasted.

Out of the two platters for one I ate my salad, prawns, and a piece of fish. My husband ate his fish and prawns. The rest was all send back because it was disgusting! When I asked them to ask the chef he must taste and tell me if that is up to standard and eatable, they looked at me as if I’m crazy.

There was a Chinese guy sitting 2 tables from us, he was complaining about his food as well, he call his waiter about 5 time to which they did not respond, so he stood up and walked out. The service was so bad, after half an hour they realized that the client was not there and he left his whole plate just like that.

We go to Ocean Basket often so I know what to expect when I order my food, and this was not like I know the standards to be. We paid almost R400 for the dinner and had to stop at a garage just to buy a pie because we were still hungry.

While my husband was paying the bill I told the manager that I don’t think the food or service was up to standard. He did not even say sorry or anything he just looked at me.

Your feedback regarding this matter will appreciated.

Kind...

I have never ever experienced such bad service like i did on saturday evening 8 September 2018. I took friends for a birthday dinner on;y to be seated and wait for 30 minutes to get some service, then it took another 30 minutes for our drinks and rolls to come through and then only to discover that the glasses were dirty and had to be sent back. Food was great. Then when i asked for the bill it took about 5 minutes to come through but then once again we had to wait for about 30 minutes for the card machine as no one came back to see to us. I could have walked out of there without paying for the bill and no one would hae known. When the manager came to ask if all went well i then made my complaints heard and to my surprise instead of him being apologetic and saying that he will sort out the issues, he flicked his hands back and walked away as if to say i don't care, if you did not like it then leave. Now i am not one to dine and complain to expect any freebies as i am a regular eat out fundi, but i clearly expected a decent service or atleast a hearing from the manager. None the less with all the money that i spend on eating out I then took my entourage to Aurelias to complete the birthday celebrations in which my friend was completely spoilt with that heavenly red velvet cake and macaroons and they even sang to her. Its not about us wanting a vip service but its about the good vibe and service that makes us ant to go...

Me and my wife went to dine at OB 25 September 2020 but earlier the day I googled the menu and saw a platter for 2 is R265.00 hence our decision to go there. What a disappointment we were seated directly but it took a further 15 to 20 minutes before someone took our order. In the meantime we noticed that a group of 4 people took a seat behind us and 2 to the right of us. 15minutes passed and both groups left the restaurant as no one even bothered to look at them and take their orders. This happened to 3 more groups that filled tables and left because they never got any service. By this time we already sat for 40 minutes to and by now we started complaining about the time it took to get our meal, a platter for 2. Another 5 minutes later they came and put plate of food in front of us and the only thing that was hot was the chips. The seafood was cold. The 2 pieces of fish looked like it was backed a day or 2 ago. It was the first time since lockdown started that we went there but the worst mistake I made in a long time. I do not know if OB forgot what service and good food ment but I refused to pay the bill. If this carry on you will close your doors very soon.. Would like to add that they were not very interested in clearing the tables after the previous people...
