The Filly — Restaurant in Gauteng

I have been frequenting the Filly for over 10 years now for one reason, the location, its central for most of my friends so no one really has to travel that far for a few cold ones, and catch up. The food was never really a Filly strong point, although I could never say it was bad. The last few months have been absolutely garbage, consistently. From pizza's with so much salt that they are damn near inedible, to chicken wings drowned unnecessarily in so much sauce that you may as well be eating anything, a piece of plastic with that much sauce, I would imagine, is indistinguishable from the wings served here. The 1 single stand out dish (as I said, we never ever went to Filly for the food) were the pot pies, at least we always knew, if someone was hungry, we could advise on the old faithful pot pie, steak and Guiness, or a chicken and mushroom, or even the veg pop pie which was decent as well. Unfortunately, the 1 thing we could recommend for 1st timers, the only thing, has veered down the same tragic road as the rest of the needlessly long menu. Location, location, location, we will always go back I suppose, its a very central area, and convenient for a cold pint, but amongst the 7-8 of us who frequent, we now would rather eat at home, or go to somewhere else if we have food on our minds. My first time trying this place out and I was highly disappointed, I ordered a Cappuccino and at the end of my coffee I found a dead cockroach at the bottom of my cup, needless to say I was not impressed and I felt physically sick.

we were a party of +/- 12 people and every dish we ordered other than the bangers and mash, rib basket and veg platter were disappointing

We ordered a basket and were given a basket that did not include items that were listed, once we enquired the waitress went back to the kitchen and we received the missing item. The pizza was served to us cold and was just toppings no flavor what so ever , the veg sushi was not made with fresh vegetables as the avo had already turned brown and it oddly had a fishy taste.

I know it's a pub atmosphere so ordering pizza and sushi wouldn't be advisable but if an establishment has it on their menu they must be able to deliver!

Visited the filly twice, in April and May 2022. I could not believe what the staff told me! The owner is treating his staff as slaves. On the night of the Champions League Final; employees knocked off at 4am having started work at 9am - a 19 hour shift; but thats not the winner, staff are not paid a basic salary; they must live from tips, they are entitled to 1% commission should they achieve R80 000 in sales in a month (paid mid-month, the following month) are only allowed 1 day off work per week, struggle to get their non-cash tips back from the owner (and when they do may have R500 deducted as payment for a black filly jacket), the kitchen staff are housed upstairs in the building and are therefore paid a salary of R1500 PER MONTH!
