Jack Salmon — Restaurant in KwaZulu-Natal

So I have a gluten, dairy and soy allergy. You would think, in a place where my allergies were previously recognised and where the staff made an effort to cater to that I would be taken care of, instead this time I have possibly been spiked by other almost every one of my allergies. First my meal that I ordered with mixed veg had soy sauce on it? I said I cannot have soy and he assured me there was none. Then, when I said please can I have new veg, the veg was not only frozen in the middle, but made with butter(dairy)… not sure if there’s a change in the kitchen staff or the waiter is new or what. But very unhappy with the service I received.

We had the Oysters as a starter, usually I don't like the rose water but here it was really great.

We had a sushi platter as our main and that was absolutely delicious, it didn't take too long to get our sushi either.

For dessert we shared the Panna Cotta and the brownie, the Panna Cotta was absolutely amazing. The brownie was smaller than expected but tasted delicious; the chili flakes were a really nice touch.

The food and service was great, we had a lovely waitress who got us everything in good time.

The experience at Jack Salmon Durban North had its ups and downs. The specials board grabbed our attention immediately, and I decided to try the Tuna Taco. While it looked incredible, it fell short on flavor and was ultimately underwhelming.

Lemar then noticed a 50% off sushi special, but I wish he hadn’t. The portions were cocktail-sized, and the tuna quality was disappointing—low-grade, with a stringy texture that made it less enjoyable. While the prices rival international spots like Huri or Luna, the quality didn’t come close to matching them.

On a positive note, the staff were fantastic—pleasant, attentive, and worked seamlessly as a team. None of the usual “not my table” attitude here! We even shared a few jokes with them, which added a nice touch to an otherwise mixed experience.

We went on a very windy Sunday 25th for lunch with a reservation we booked well in advance. The restaurant was packed and noisy. The hostess was very helpful but could only find a table next to the entrance. We then decided to get our food ready for a takeout and sit peacefully at home and enjoy. What disappointment! The Kingklip gluons weren’t crisp, the veg was hard and raw and the butter sauce tasted fake. My wife had a grilled Kingklip with rice and the rice was wasn’t soft and again the butter sauce was revolting. My cousin ordered a grilled Salmon which was ok except for the skin which wasn’t crispy. Her portion of chips and rice was minimal. R850 with a tip for a meal with no attentions was a total waste and of course we would never consider going back. I’m a professional cook-chef and very quato give this negative review.
