Vapor Cafe — Restaurant in Morningside

We had read and heard of this place being so nice and the food awesome. Since we were here, just for the one night, we opted to try them out, my son phoned them at around 23.00 to inquire if they were open, the gentleman on the phone, said, they were opened, they close around 1.30am and the kitchen closes at 12.30, he told him we were on our way. We got there, and their dining area door was closed, we had to ask if they were open, the waitresses were sitting and chatting. We were allowed in, once seated, the lady that was at the door was our waitress, she does not greet, smile or welcome u, she brought the menus and left she later came to take the order, and my son clearly told her we wanted 3 steak n cheese rolls and 1 cheese burger, she wrote it down, we ask her if they have milkshakes, and she went and brought the menu, we told her to get the order ready, we will order our milkshakes once we had decided. We then had to call for her, my daughter in law gave her our milkshake and drinks order. In all this time, the female staff were being very noisy, loud and screaming and laughing,including our waitress. In the meantime, two gentlemen can in, another waitress served them, by then 1steak n cheese roll and the cheese burger arrived, our milkshakes took a while to come,but it eventually did come, my daughter in law's milkshake wasn't the one she ordered, the tonic and cola that was ordered was over flavored and the ice looked like it was scraped of from the side of the freezer, it tasted horrible, in all this time, my daughter in law and I were waiting for our order, the two gentlemen, next to us had their full meal and their waitress had come to check on them a few times, our waitress simply disappeared, after almost what seemed liked an eternity, she comes in from outside, still not checking on us, laughing and talking to the order waitress, my daughter in law, went up to her and asked her for our orders, she says, oh I thought you wanted 1, and walks to the back to get it, no apology, nothing, in all this time u can hear all the female staff, laughing and singing, very irritating, we waited a while, and then we hear plates falling, as I looked, I saw our waitress had fallen and dropped bought our orders all on the flour, my son went to check, and she was picking everything up from the floor, my daughter in law, then went and told them to cancel the order, another person offered to make it, but we refused,as they had made us wait long enough. After all this, our waitress, she didn't come and explain or apologise My sons shared their meals with us, and we were just about finished, when another gentleman, not sure if he is the manager or the owner, came and asked us if we were okay. My son was tired and wasn't interested in getting into any thing, so he said yes and asked for the bill, my daughter in law went to pay, and the same gentleman came to help her, she made sure she complained, about the poor service, and the terrible waitress, he did apologize and asked if we wanted to add anything extra to the payment, really, after us complaining, he still expected us to leave something for our waitress. Definitely not, as we got into our vehicle, another gentleman came to apologize and his excuse was she was new. We were totally disappointed with everything. Management should teach their staff to be more friendly, courteous and not to be so noisy and loud, no matter how late a customer comes in, if u open for business at that hour, your service must also remain of...

So we decided to just pop in here for supper all the way from pietermaritzburg because we've heard the food was good from a few people.

At first glance we looked at the diner section and were a bit confused because we were wondering where we were going to sit Hehe.

So we grabbed a drink at taco Zulu and came back at supper time and we didn't have a reservation but a place was made for us to sit and we were literally spoiled for choice when we had a look at the menu.

Eventually we decided to order the Bonnie and Clyde platter and 6 wings with gunfire sauce.

We were told our food was going to take a while to get to us as they were super busy(it was month end) and we were okay with that.

Our food arrived in the next 35 to 40 minutes and I was definitely impressed because I thought it would take way longer.

I had a chocolate milkshake which was super chocolatey and creamy.

When the food come I was gobsmacked, there were 6 prawns the size of my hand until past my wrist drenched in a delicious lemon herb sauce, 2 pieces of sole cooked in a creamy lemon sauce, 4 pieces of garlic ciabatta, a portion of deliciously crisp fried chips, a yummy Greek village salad with dressing and an extra little bowl of the lemon butter sauce.

The wings were presented on a silver platter, they were while wings!!!!! Unlike other franchises that cut the wing in half and sell them as individuals. They looked like they were marinated in the sauce for days, the outside was crisp, the gunfire sauce was fiery but delicious(not for the faint hearted). I couldn't stop eating it, the meat fell off the bone and it was succulent and not dry at all.

The prawns were beautifully cooked to perfection, they were somehow crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside and so so creamy! The sauce was just a bonus. They wereny chewy or gamey at all.

The sole literally melted as we cut into it and the sauce was perfectly paired to this choice of fish.

The ciabatta had been loaded with garlic butter, they were thick and chunky but somehow the garlic butter seeped right into the center of it and it was crisped on the outside and soft on the inside.

The chips were fried crisp and seasoned well. The salad was also a delicious accompaniment to our meal.

I was honestly so happy when eating this meal, we didn't have to wait forever to receive it. It was well worth the price. The meals arrived piping hot and super fresh.

The service we received was amazing, our waiter checked on us and made sure we were well taken care of the entire night. There was also entertainment in the form of a dancer and she did 3 styles of dancing and it was lovely to watch.

The chef who Whipped all of that up is a genius and the food was beyond magical.

Nothing I've eaten since has lived up to the standard this meal alone has set.

I would recommend this restaurant over and over and over. They literally have everything you need on their menu.

I can't wait to come back and try everything else on the menu soon. Everything was wholesome and delicious. Thank you for the amazing evening!! A gastronomic explosion for the Meat cum Seafood Lovers, and a culinary neglect for Vegetarians. Our group ordered a seafood platter. It could have easily satisfied five people or 4... depending on everyone's appetite. It was a variety of seafood to satisfy everyone's taste buds draped in a rich creamy sauce on a bed of chips and rice on a silver tray. Pricey but it definitely sated everyone's appetite. And then came the vegetarian menu....almost nothing. The saving grace was the pizza place attached to this venue. Limited to say the least. I guess the owner catered for his market and forgot the occasional vegetarian who may grace his threshold with their presence. The pizza was dry and lacked the layers of ingredients especially cheese. It lacked the Italian stamp of a great pizza. The drinks (non-alcohol) were pricey. Perhaps it was the final weekend of the long holiday season and a 21st celebration which contributed to a noisy ambience. It lacked the fine dining experience. It probably the ideal venue for a younger crowd. A plus because it's a Halal venue. Probably the other plus would be that it’s situated in a nicer area, central but away from the hubbub of the city centre. And yes....do go if you looking for a gastronomic seafood meal....and can overlook the niceties in life. I didn't enjoy the experience of following the waitress through throngs of noisy patrons and cluttering cutlery to a stationed card machine to pay a humongous bill. For me...
