Being a huge fan of Asian food in general, I was excited to try Taishan for lunch on a cold, rainy day. On arrival, the host/manager, Zimbabwean man, was polite. Sushi off the belt was fine. I ordered the Hot and Sour soup which had a greyish brown color, thick custard consistency with an excessive amount of pepper and actual pepper corns in it. Honestly, had 2 spoons and just couldnโt. I informed the manager, politely, that I unfortunately couldnโt bare the dish. I went for the green curry, take away, as I figured it was safe. Well, with only 2 other tables in the restaurant (1 table that had received mains already, the other table had 2 people sharing prawns) it took about 25-30mins for me to speak up about my order. When I walked over to the ask where my order was, I saw the kitchen staff watching sports on their tablet/laptop!. I complained and my food came about 10 mins later. The manager refused to take the soup off the bill. The green curry had the color and consistency of brown/green baby poop. Like custard but a bit thicker, with a good slick of yellow oil floating on top. I tasted it, again swamped with black pepper. Iโm shocked.

ย ย ย Read moreConcluding my second trip to Taishan, I can safely say that it's worth a visit. Their prices are quite incredible. My colleague and I enjoyed five plates of sushi and a large portion of Chinese noodles, sake, green tea and two sparkling waters for less than R300
The sushi was okay. The more common plates were stronger than the deep friend and more experimental sushi options. The noodles were excellent, consistent with my first visit
They could do with some loose leaf tea to add to the authenticity of the experience. Their sake was exceptional. The atmosphere is quite typical of a local Chinese restaurant. The interior and quality of furniture and utensils is largely underwhelming. Everything is relatively clean
Would return any time, especially...

However when I got home, the only vegetables was, I recon, a table spoon of frozen mixed vegetables, not fresh veggies. There was probably half a chicken fillets thinly sliced in the dish. Rice was abundant. No sauce, little flavor ๐
The overall taste of my food was bland and very disappointing.
My husband had beef noodles and had lovely fresh veggies in, lots of flavor. We also had pot stickers which were very tasty.
I had so looked forward to trying the food, but am really...
