A Disappointing Experience at what is known as a Cape Town icon...

A first time visit, excited to experience what has been touted as a local gem. Given its rich history, I had high hopes despite some mixed reviews. Unfortunately, my visit on a Sunday turned out to be far from the charming experience I had envisioned.

Upon our arrival, it was evident that Sunday was bustling, largely due to the popular carvery. I had made a reservation for 4 people, days in advance, so I was taken aback when we were shown to a cramped table set for three. The hostess, after a cursory glance at our party, decided our comfort was of little concern, delivering a fourth chair to us at an awkwardly positioned table right opposite the entrance. To make matters worse, we found ourselves squeezed between the busy bar area and a narrow passage where patrons frequently brushed past, nearly toppling my daughter from the very high chairs at the very high wobbling table we were uncomfortably seated at. It was evident that this table was as crammed and uncomfortable in this space as we were, and was only placed there to up the numbers.

Despite my attempts to politely request a seating change, I was met with indifference. The two waiters I approached reassured me that we could be moved when tables became available; alas, this never transpired. Instead, we watched as walk-in customers, were greeted with familiarity and friendliness and received far more comfortable accommodations, leaving me to wonder if our status as first-time visitors and clearly not among the usual demographic— factored into our treatment.

As for the service, it was dismal at best. After dropping off three menus with little explanation, the waiter promptly returned within half a minute to ask for our drink orders. Feeling rushed, we requested a moment to decide and asked for a fourth menu. We then endured an agonizing wait of 20 minutes before he resurfaced for our order. Our drinks arrived fashionably late, followed by the uncomfortable process of ordering food while no one checked in with us.

When the food finally arrived, it was, thankfully, the only tiny highlight of our visit. While the portions felt overpriced for the size (refer to pic of the overpriced chicken schnitzel at R185) - the flavors were not too bad but not spectacular. However, this joy was short-lived and disappointment crept in again, no one followed up after serving our meals; I found myself having to hunt down salt and pepper, as the only condiment provided was a greasy bottle of tomato sauce unceremoniously dumped on our table beside the cutlery.

I had selected Forresters Arms, based on its rich history and the hope of enjoying a memorable meal, but I left feeling more deflated than satisfied. If this establishment continues to prioritize the experience of its established local clientele, neglecting the diversity and potential of newcomers, it risks becoming more of a miss than the hit it once was. For now, I cannot endorse this establishment as a must-visit...

I recently had the pleasure of dining at The Foresters Arms in the picturesque suburb of Newlands, Cape Town, and it was truly an exceptional experience. From the moment I walked through the door, I knew I was in for a treat.

Atmosphere: The Foresters Arms exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere that instantly puts you at ease. The interior is beautifully decorated with a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern elegance. The cozy fireplace creates a cozy ambiance, making it a perfect choice for a romantic dinner or a relaxed gathering with friends. The friendly staff and attentive service added to the overall welcoming vibe of the place.

Cuisine: The menu at The Foresters Arms boasts a variety of mouthwatering dishes that cater to all tastes. Whether you're a meat lover or a vegetarian, you'll find plenty of options to satisfy your cravings. I opted for their signature dish, the grilled sirloin steak, and it was cooked to perfection. The meat was tender, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the accompanying side dishes. The menu also offers a great selection of vegetarian and seafood options, ensuring that there's something for everyone.

Drinks: The bar at The Foresters Arms deserves a special mention. They have an impressive range of local and international beers, as well as an extensive wine list featuring some of South Africa's finest vintages. The knowledgeable staff was more than happy to recommend the perfect pairing for my meal, and their expertise added an extra dimension to the dining experience.

Service: The service at The Foresters Arms was exceptional from start to finish. The staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. They were quick to offer recommendations and cater to any dietary preferences or allergies. Despite the restaurant being busy, the staff ensured that all guests were well taken care of, creating a seamless and enjoyable dining experience.

Overall Experience: The Foresters Arms in Newlands is a hidden gem that truly captures the essence of Cape Town's culinary scene. The combination of delicious food, cozy ambiance, and impeccable service makes it a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists. Whether you're looking for a memorable dining experience or a relaxed evening with friends, The Foresters Arms will exceed your expectations.

I highly recommend visiting The Foresters Arms in Newlands, Cape Town. Prepare to be delighted by their delectable cuisine, warm atmosphere, and outstanding service. It's a dining experience you won't...

We made a booking for mothers day and I mentioned my daughter so can we be seated nearby the play area. With it the first time being there they didn't care to make mention that wel be seated outside on wet damp soggy benches. My mom is arthritic and came from church in a cream coat, which needless to say had a dark black mark on it as did my dress. When asked if the waiter can bring her a pillow, after requesting it again, the extremely rude waiter said he's busy. 10min later he hands he a folded up piece of cardboard!!! Wow when they are benches inside with leather pillows on them. It was then made very clear we where treated differently as we where not "the regulars" My husband waited until his food was finished before he had to remind the waiter of his hot chocolate. The carvery seems to be popular so we went for that. You stand in such a long que while what looked like take aways containers where being filled by the servers. No communication is given of what to do. The lady serving the veg could barely even look at us. I honestly felt as if I was being an inconvenience to her being there. This is no way to feel welcomed to a restaurant or put me in the mood to enjoy this plate of food. When my mom in law asked for a slightly less bloody piece of beef from the cavery, she was completely ignored abs said it's all like this. Again... wow.. the service and attitude of the staff is enough to put you off.

The cavery I enjoyed however. I have been to many buffets and carverys. I will say for R275 for a plate the quantity, and quality accompanied by unwelcoming staff is not at all worth the visit. After not even finishing our food, due to the very cold damp wet uncomfortable seating environment, we got the bill. The waiter doesn't even thank us, ask did we enjoy it? Absolutely nothing! I was taken a back. You got to spur and received much better service from staff for goodness sake. And the cherry on the cake was being charged R35 for a slice of cheese on the kiddies burger. Talk about a complete rip off.

Definitely will never be back , nor will I ever recommend Foresters Arms to any family or friends travelling in and out of cpt or SA based on our first and only experience that ruined...

Foresters Arm was an instant hit. Everyone loved the vibe... especially under the grapevines where gossip ran hot! And what, pray tell, was the tea being spilled? "This shot can't possibly be the right size", "Now that's what I call shrink-flation", and "This Jagger is definitely not 35ml!" was heard both murmured and exclaimed! Could it be? Shocking! Scandalous! We just had to investigate! ... Alas, upon repeated inquiry, the answer from the barkeep and waitron was a stock-standard, non-committal, "It is a shot." But that did not satisfy our too-sober-after-two-shots curiosity! And so we kidnapped one tiny plastic goblet and applied to it the rigorous scientific method. (I.e. we measured it in the kitchen!) The definitive and exact result of our investigation is that a Forries shot is on the dot 20ml, (17ml allowing for 3ml of spillage by the time it reaches your table). And that makes R50 a helluva lot of money for a helluva little liquid. The truth now revealed, only one question remains... will I go back? Of course I will. We had an absolute blast.

Avoid the nachos sharing platter for 2, it’s barely a single portion. We added the extra chicken to make sure there was enough to share. Note the knife and fork in the photo for scale. The nachos chips in the middle were soggy. We asked the waiter if this was the right meal and he confirmed that it was the sharing platter for 2 people. The manager did come over and was gracious and said he’d bring us some more to add to our meal. He brought a small saucer with a couple of nachos chips, some quac and sour cream. We went home hungry and disappointed. The manager did say he’d raise it with the owner and I hope he does. It’s a sad little meal. They should do it right or take it off the menu. Call it a starter portion for 2 or call it a single portion. It only takes one bad experience to lose a lifelong customer.
