Montebello Design Centre — Attraction in Newlands

Quaint place with a very wide variety of shops/stalls. Be it art, crafts, jewellery, decor etc. there’s bound to be something that catches your fancy. As with most things in Cape Town though, it is tourist focused and not always so friendly on the local pocket. But if you’re not in the mood to shop, strolling around the lovely nursery and it’s many little greenhouses is also a wonderful pastime. A real Newlands institution. Despite UCT's best efforts to eliminate the place and prevent it from becoming a proper design centre it has evolved to become an important location in the area. Features a great gift shop and the fantastic Gardeners Cottage Restaurant in addition to a collection of workshops for artists and small businesses. It has been around since at least the mid-1990s. I live quite close by and absolutely love to have coffee there, wandering around, chatting to the artists, also the tranquil space, the trees, the sound of the birds, the shade, the art and creativity.
