Bootlegger Dean Street — Restaurant in Newlands

We sat for at least 10 minutes without being acknowledged or approached. I eventually went up to the counter and asked if we order at the counter these days and the lady said no and that she will get to us a soon as she can. I asked if I could order a Berry Shake and Iced Coffee and she advised that we could have neither as they had run out of ice and ice cream. I asked if she could come back to the table with me to advise my guest and take an order and she shouted for someone else to follow me. I understand that this is a franchise and that ordering procedures are strict but surely in an emergency they could get ice or ice-cream from Woolies next door? We ordered regular cool drinks and my glass was not clean so I drank it out of the bottle. Turns out the apathetic and lackadaisical character leaning on the counter is the Manager. I’ve been coming to Bootlegger Dean Street since they opened. Their hot chocolate got me through matric, and now, as a university student, it is my favourite place to go and study or catch up on lectures. They have the best food, the best service, and the friendliest employees of any Bootlegger I’ve been to. I so enjoy going there, especially when my favourite employees are working, like the lovely Asenathi, among others. Bootleggers Newlands is a convenient, walking distance coffee shop for me as my bnb is within walking distance. Sadly, the service is an absolute shocker. Doesn’t matter which day of the week or the time. The poor staff are clearly run off their feet and they obviously don’t have enough kitchen staff. The service is simply a shambles. The food and coffee are good but one is lucky if food is still warm by the time one gets it.
