My parents are visiting. Took them to Mill House for lunch. It was terrible. After visiting the Stable restaurant at Vergelegen yesterday, Mill House was such a bad experience. My dad was served a steak without a steak knife. I had to go and find someone to give me one. My mom and daughter received their food after ours. To give you an idea, the waitress brought my and dad and my food, went off with a bill for another table. Spoke with me, for me to ask for a knife and 5 minutes after that my mom and daughters food arrived. My daughter found a chicken bone in her chicken on her pizza. Not once were we asked if we were enjoying our meal. Once we had finished eating, we sat with empty plates and needing take away boxes. I had to ask another waitress to call out waitress to bring us the bill. That is the only time, we received any resemblance of service. We told the waitress about the bone. The manager came over and apologized and offered to make a new pizza. A bit late. Also, what is the point? Now we must sit around while she eats her second pizza? Maybe checking on patrons while they are eating is a better approach. The whole experience was a waste of money. When the person serving you your meal makes you feel unwelcome, but is happy to accept her 10% tip, then I will not be going there again. The restaurant was also quiet, which made the poor service or complete lack of service even worse. All a person wants when you go to a restaurant is the correct utensils for eating, for all your meals to be served at once and for the wait staff or manager to check all is in order. Its the bear minimum, yet it is lacking. We did not bother with dessert or coffee, not that any was offered. Would NOT recommend Mill House Kitchen. Rather go to The Stables Restaurant at Vergelegen. The staff and management are attentive, welcoming and its a great experience. The waitress got her 10% tip, because I too was a waitress and always tip. She actually deserved nothing. A total...
Read moreWe’ve eaten at the Millhouse many, many times over the years, often served by the charming Stanley. The setting is magnificent, being in the heart of the wonderful Lourensford Estate gardens. The food and service are reliably good. But it was inevitable we’d hit a bad night. And so it was. Booked on line at lunchtime for an evening dinner in the glasshouse. Confirmation received immediately by both text and email. Pitched up 2 minutes early to be met by a bemused front of house member. He couldn’t find the reservation. It turns out they print off the reservations in the morning. So if you’re dumb enough to book on line for the same day, they won’t get it! Anyhow, he told use we were ‘lucky’ as he still had a few free tables. We were lucky?! ‘May we sit at one of the free tables in the glasshouse?’. ‘No, you may not. They are all reserved!’ You don’t say! We sit on one of the tables in the main restaurant on uncomfortable metal chairs. Served by the amiable, pleasant Patrick. Whilst we sit at the table, we watch the staff pick up a table and move it into the glasshouse for a couple of arrivals. Perhaps we should have been more assertive. Food was as good as ever and the portions were generous. Though it was spoilt by two bored young children running up and down the restaurant incessantly. Ignored by their parents whilst the overstretched staff tried to navigate round them. What’s wrong with the beautiful outside? Getting the bill proved to be a real mission as it would seem the staff were overstretched. That said, we did manage to get the eye of a young lady server. She pointed us out to her boss who promptly ignored us. The only way to get the bill paid was to get up and stand patiently at the desk. We’ll give the place a...
Read moreJust arrived home after a Valentine’s dinner with my wife at Millhouse Kitchen. This was the worst meal I’ve ever experienced at a restaurant.
We chose the Valentine’s special. To start, we were served a Mediterranean platter for two, which was decent, except for the roast vegetables being ice cold. Despite this, we remained optimistic. Having been here several times over the past few years, our experiences had always been great.
For her main course, my wife chose the beef short rib risotto. Unfortunately, it seems the chef is doesn’t know what a proper risotto is and showed a lack of respect for customers by serving the mess we received. The rice was undercooked, surrounded by liquid (which I hesitate to call stock) at the edges, and tasted extremely bitter. I offered to swap my pasta for her risotto, but after one bite, we pushed it aside. Serving something of this quality in a restaurant is unacceptable. How can a risotto be ruined to this extent? I had the seafood penne, which was cold but acceptable. This is not the standard I’ve come to expect from Millhouse Kitchen. We returned the risotto, and our waitress kindly offered us butternut ravioli as a takeaway.
It’s important to note that the service was excellent, and I do not blame the staff for the food’s quality.
Upon tasting the ravioli at home, I was astonished. Is this some kind of joke? The pasta was extremely thick and undercooked, and the butternut filling tasted completely off.
We used to love this place, but now I’m uncertain if we’ll ever return. It was beyond a disappointment,...
