This is such a beautiful spot and I was so excited about finally being here. The mocktails were absolutely delicious, my waitress recommended the blueberry one and I couldn't have been happier. The food however took forever to come, management did explain that it's due to the fact that it is prepared from scratch. So don't go there hungry, unless you don't mind waiting 30-40min. Flavourful is not a word I'd use to describe their speciality meal which is the chicken alfredo, it tasted really bland for me, so you can imagine how grateful I was for the salt and pepper to try and resurrect this meal somewhat but even that didnt fully do the trick. The other meal that was had was a freedom chicken strips meal that had great potential according to the menu and ingredients but also didnt quite hit it on the nail. So in overall the meals were average in my opinion. The service was amazing 10/10. And although I don't see myself returning for the food, I would definitely come back to try out their dessert selection which looks like paradise that can literally melt...
Read moreDisaster! Dont let the innovative use of NO space fool you... the service here is very Anti-FREEDOM! Sat here for over an hour, after ordering, and still no food. Yet the couple next to us, having ordered atleast 10min after us, got their food with similar items ordered. After waiting an additional 20min, and no semblance of an apology from the waiters, we decided to just leave. Its never an easy decision to make, having committed so much of time to waiting for a meal, and being hungry, but again, with not even the slightest bit of interest from the waiters we left the R52 for the two cappuccinos and walked out - again, NO apology from them. Whether they just have no understanding what their industry is about, or if it was discrimination, because another couple were clearly facing the same distress across the room, I don't really care anymore, because they do not deserve my hard earned money from...
Read moreFreedom Cafe is a delight. The (vegetarian) food is uniformly fantastic. More, the atmosphere is light, warm, welcoming, and chic. Staff are smart, urbane, insightful, helpful and friendly, and everyone working at the Cafe has interesting thoughts about contemporary issues in South African, Durban and the world. We were visiting from the States (Seattle), staying at the adjacent hotel (The Concierge) and spent as much time at Freedom Cafe as we could work into our schedule. The local Durban residents we know also like to find their way to Freedom Cafe for a respite. It's in a cool leafy courtyard completely encircled by the buildings of the lovely little hotel. Between Campbell and Saint Mary's Avenue, with entrances off of each. Owners Kuda & Michelle are wonderful to spend time with, and the staff is great to chat with and extremely helpful. Beer and wine. ...
