Sitara – A Culinary Gem in the Heart of Durban If you're in Durban and haven’t yet experienced Sitara, you’re truly missing out! This newly discovered gem, nestled in the heart of the city, is a beautiful family restaurant that serves some of the most authentic and mouthwatering Indian food I’ve had in a long time. As someone who absolutely loves Indian food, I can confidently say Sitara is going to be my new go-to spot for a great Indian meal. It’s very different from our traditional home-style cooking—bolder, richer, and packed with a unique blend of spices that make every bite memorable. The food here is freshly prepared, so while it may take a little time, it’s absolutely worth the wait. Dining here honestly felt like a mini trip to an Indian restaurant, without even leaving Durban. The atmosphere, the aroma, the flavours, it all came together so beautifully. My family and I had the pleasure of indulging here on a Sunday, and from the moment we walked in, we were impressed. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, perfect for a family outing or even a cozy date night. The service was excellent, and the cleanliness of the space including the restrooms, which were spotless and smelled fresh, deserves a special mention. Now, onto the food, honestly, it’s too delicious for words, but I’ll try! We started with the veg platter, a vibrant spread that included crispy battered potatoes, flavorful Gobi 65 (cauliflower in a tandoori-style batter), fried crispy onions, and a divine paneer tossed with peppers and onions. Every bite was packed with flavour and texture. For mains, the veg biryani stood out, aromatic, beautifully spiced, and incredibly tasty. The mixed veg korma and butter paneer were equally delightful, rich, creamy, and full of depth. On the non-veg side, the chicken tikka was perfectly cooked juicy, full of flavour, and served with chips and the softest, flakiest naan I’ve ever had. And the butter chicken? Easily one of the best we've tasted, rich, creamy, and absolutely satisfying. To end the meal, I tried their South Indian filter coffee, as a coffee lover, I can confidently say it was outstanding. Smooth, rich, and comforting, I’ll definitely be going back just for that coffee! Another lovely touch, Sitara even has options for the little people (kids), so now there are no excuses not to give this gem a try. It’s the kind of place that would make a perfect venue for a family gathering comfortable, accommodating, and full of flavourful delights for every age. Sitara truly caters to everyone, whether you're vegetarian or not, there’s something here to delight your palate. This restaurant is a must-visit, and once you’ve tried it, you’ll understand why words simply don’t do it justice. Open 7 days a week, don’t wait. Go and experience Sitara for yourself. 10/10 to this rising star on the Durban food scene!

I visited Sitara a week ago with my father and sister and the 3 of us were quite disappointed with our experience. Before making a reservation we looked up the restaurant on google to find a 4.8 star review average, which in retrospect was very misleading. My sister and I both ordered lassi's to drink, however we only received one lassi when our drinks arrived, so my sister had to wait about 15 minutes for hers. The food took far too long to arrive, even though the restaurant was not that busy. Our starter platter was disappointing, we had a Chinese board, the presentation was average, the flavour was lacking, nothing tasted fresh, and most importantly the vegetarian momos were so over cooked that it was completely hard and dry inside. Yet again we waited a long while for our mains to arrive, while we waited patiently, we had to flag down our waiter several times for assistance to place a drink order, to clear our table, and to query how much longer we'd have to wait for our food. Bare in mind the restaurant was not full, however there was a large table of guests behind us who received the most attention from the wait staff. Before our mains could arrive we were given fresh plates and cutlery, which the waiter just stacked on to the edge of our table and left. We ordered 2 main meals to share, a veg briyani, a vegetarian manchurian garvy, and a side of naan. We did not enjoy the flavours in our main meals either, the spices in the briyani tasted raw, and the veg manchurian gravy left a lot to be desired as it lacked a good balance of flavours and the gravy was clearly thickened with far too much corn starch creating a strange consistency. The side of naan we ordered tasted okay for the most part except that 2 out of the 4 pieces were a little burnt. After our main meal we waited a long time for a waiter to clear our table, and yet again we had to flag a waiter down to assist us. Despite this we still wanted to try out some of the desserts as the menu showcased some interesting options not offered at other Indian restaurants, however majority of the specialty dessert options were not available, at which point we were so over the whole experience, we just asked for the bill and left. The manager did not visit our table to check in on us.

From the moment I stepped into Sitara, I knew I was in for something special. The ambience strikes just the right balance between elegant and inviting warm lighting, tasteful yet minimalist décor, subtle Indian motifs, and the gentle fragrance of spices greeting you at the door. Seating felt comfortable and well spaced; whether you’re on a date or dining with family, privacy isn’t compromised, yet the space feels alive. Service was impeccable. Our server was attentive without being obtrusive, knew the menu well, was ready to offer recommendations, and ensured each course came at a good pace. Even before the food arrived, the presentation of the starters hinted at excellence: papadums crisp and warm, chutneys in prettily presented. We ordered a selection of breyani’s, lamb dishes , chilli chicken dry, garlic naan, all with a level of authenticity that delighted. The chilli chicken dry was succulent, well marinated, not overly seasoned. The lamb champaran dish had depth, the meat tender, the sauce rich without being too heavy, spices layered but not overwhelming. The biryani (fish and a chicken) both was fragrant you could taste saffron and cardamom dancing through the rice, with well seared pieces tucked inside. Garlic naan was fluffy, buttery, slightly crisp at edges. What’s more, the quality matches the price. Each dish delivers value. Portions are generous without being wasteful. Food presentation is artful colors vibrant, plating neat, each dish garnished thoughtfully. All told, Sitara hits all the marks authentic taste, excellent service, beautiful environment, strong food presentation, comfortable seating, right pricing for what you get. I would return many times over and recommend it without hesitation to anyone craving true Indian cuisine in Durban.
