Sheobul — Restaurant in Busan

We were specifically visiting the Westin to have a Korean dining experience. I called in advance to make the reservation and to advise them of a gluten allergy (celiac), which they assured me they could handle. We are English-speaking with no Korean, which is also the reason for going to a Westin.

On arrival, we were seated promptly. We ordered a bottle of wine and proceeded to ask about food. A good portion of the menu requires ordering in advance. This limited choices unexpectedly. (If the options aren't available, don't give a guest a menu with those pages or state this in the menu.) The hostess did not speak enough English to explain much, which made it more difficult.

Using a translator app, we again explained the gluten concern. There was only one option on the menu that was truly gluten free! Note that even traditional Korean foods, like kimchi, which are typically glutenfree, are not here. We ended up with 3 different dishes.

The glutenfree dish was the Korean beef bone soup, which was almost devoid of any flavor and any richness that using bones should have provided. The other dishes were mediocre at best, with the exception of the cold noodle appetizer, which was delicious.

Add to it that people got sick, and this was a disaster. One of the party ended up down for 36 hours with a stomach problem that caused vomiting from their meal, and another who tasted that meal simply felt nauseous for several hours.

While this was actually safe for gluten and the cold noodles were delicious, thus 2 stars, the limited menu, mediocre service, and illness made this meal a disaster. We...
