"Let's Explore Every Coffee in the World"
The speciality coffee scene is flourishing in South Korea, and the city of Daegu (Gyeongsang-buk Province) is setting the standard high. Testament to this is local coffee roaster Cupoโs newest venture โBlack Road Coffee; opened recently in December 2020 this is visually, and conceptually, one of the most unique cafes in the country.
Enter their second floor, candle lit, mahogony clad cafe and you could be mistaken for finding a speakeasy whisky bar. Upon "checking-in", each customer is invited to taste three different styles of coffee before Captain Shin (owner and head roaster) and his crew of expert baristas lead lead you on a bespoke coffee expedition. Instead of maps youโll be using their illustrated guide books, each with detailed descriptions of the region, coffee bean variety and process of every cup. The guide books come in three different levels from Newbie, Intermediate and finally Master level, each one with an accompanying badge or rank to indicate the stage of your coffee journey.
The variety of coffee beans is astounding; their coffee list has over 20 different varieties including Colombia, Kenya, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, Costa Rica, Honduras and Ethiopia. A rare selection of processes are also available including Slow Dry, Yeast Fermentation, Geisha Natural, Black Honey and Double Anaerobic. Naturally the price for each cup of coffee ranges depending on the exclusivity and volume of beans available. Starting at 6,000 ์ ($ 5.40) the most expensive cups of coffee range from 12,000 ์ ($ 10.90) up to 20,000 ์ ($ 18.10).
