I’m very disappointed with the behavior of the baristas at this Starbucks. Even though I clearly ordered a matcha latte with oat milk in Korean, I was served a latte with cow’s milk. I tried to inform the woman of the mistake, but she told me I would have to order again and pay a second time. She immediately set the drink aside while telling me that.

At first, not knowing yet that the milk was also wrong, I said, “If I can’t get a replacement, then please at least give me the drink.” It was only while checking the label on my way out that I noticed it was made with cow’s milk.

So I turned back and explained that I had asked for oat milk because I cannot drink cow’s milk. In fact, I am allergic to lactose.

At first, they told me I was wrong and hadn’t said that— but even if they wanted to blame my Korean pronunciation, “matcha” is pronounced almost the same in every language, so that excuse was clearly dishonest.

In the end, they seemed to accept the complaint and said they would remake the drink with oat milk. The woman handed me a new cup saying “latte with oat milk.” I thought, “Well, it’s not what I originally wanted, but at least I’ll get to drink something I paid for,” because otherwise, she would have just thrown it away with no replacement.

But when I got to my friend’s place and took a sip, I realized it was once again made with cow’s milk. I could tell immediately by the taste, and soon my face started turning red and I had trouble breathing.

I am allergic to cow’s milk. I don’t ask for oat milk to be difficult, dear Starbucks baristas.

If you make a mistake, please apologize and remake the drink I actually ordered.

Never come to this Starbucks if you want to be treated with respect.

한국어: 저는 이 스타벅스의 바리스타들의 태도에 매우 실망했습니다. 제가 분명히 한국어로 “오트밀크로 만든 말차 라떼”를 주문했음에도 불구하고, 일반 우유가 들어간 라떼를 받았습니다. 이 실수를 직원에게 알리려 했지만, 그 여성분은 다시 주문하고 다시 결제해야 한다고 말했습니다. 그녀는 음료를 바로 옆에 치우며 그렇게 말했어요.

처음에는 단지 제가 원래 원하던 음료가 아니더라도, 교환이 안 된다면 그냥 주시라고 부탁드렸습니다. 하지만 길에서 라벨을 확인해 보니, 분명히 우유가 들어 있었다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

그래서 다시 돌아가, 제가 우유를 마실 수 없기 때문에 오트밀크로 요청드렸다고 설명했습니다. 저는 락토오스 알레르기가 있습니다.

처음엔 저에게 그런 말을 한 적 없다고 하면서, 제 한국어 발음을 탓하셨지만, ‘말차’는 어떤 언어에서도 다 비슷하게 발음되는 단어라 변명의 여지가 없었습니다. 명백히 책임을 회피하는 태도였습니다.

결국에는 음료를 새로 만들어주겠다고 하면서, 오트밀크가 들어간 라떼를 주셨습니다. 솔직히 제가 원했던 건 말차 라떼였지만, 적어도 제가 돈을 지불한 음료를 마실 수 있다는 생각에 그냥 받았습니다. 왜냐하면 그렇지 않았다면, 아무 대처 없이 음료를 버리고 끝났을 테니까요.

그런데 친구 집에 도착해서 한 모금 마시자마자, 이건 또다시 일반 우유라는 걸 알게 되었습니다. 맛으로 확실히 느껴졌고, 제 얼굴이 빨개지기 시작했고 호흡이 가빠졌습니다.

저는 우유 알레르기가 있습니다. 여러분을 귀찮게 하려고 오트밀크를 요청하는 게 아닙니다.

실수하셨다면, 사과하시고 제가 주문한 음료를 제대로 만들어 주세요.
