Restaurante Siglodoce — Restaurant in Ávila

We had a really nice experience with this restaurant and it’s all kudos to Jony (Jonathan).

We decided to spend our last day in Madrid in Avila. We were there from 9:30 to 13:30 so obviously we don’t have that much time to do everything on a relaxed pace.

The plan was to just see the walls, visit the cathedral, try the chuleton and roam around. Maybe go to Mirador cuatros potes if we still have time.

12noon came, I saw this restaurant online and since they open at 12, we went inside and asked if there’s reservation needed and they said no. Jony was entertaining us and specifically told him we were in a hurry and we were a little full still as we had just ate in a nearby cafe. He suggested the chicken salad and the chuleton for us to share because the portions are big enough to satisfy us.

We asked him for some ‘advice’ on how we go to Mirador given that we only have little time left and oh boy he did not disappoint. He even managed to get us a map, he told us to take a taxi from the restaurant and go to Mirador and ask the driver to wait for us to take a couple of photos and drive us straight to the train station and it was very convenient.

Food came and he gave us a broth! It was really good and it was for free!!! We were the very first customer there so everything we ordered came really quick. The chicken salad was SOOOO GOOOD and the serving was big. The chuleton came and although it was good, I felt like I want it to be a little salty. But anyway there’s a little salt on top of it so I kind of spread it a little.

We finished everything in 35 mins, paid the bill, left and went straight to the taxi stand that Jony told us to take.

Thank you Jony! I have visited Avila a lot of times already and I was just there to tour my friends. I will definitely eat here again and will recommend this to everyone I know that will visit Avila.

Another great example of how restaurant reviews are affected by a lot of parameters other than food quality. The place is next to Avila's cathedral (actually, you can have a table right at the cathedral's side wall), so I imagine a lot of tourists go by, chose the menu not knowing anything about local food (or food in general) but feeling a great experience because of the place or whatever else. We too had the menu. The three starters were flavorless, with a special mention for the castellana soup, just a greasy broth. The main dish, the famous Ávila chuletón, was tasteless and made on the stove! We complained and they confirmed they had no grill in-house, which is simply unbelievable, and we got offered a replacement. The second steak was as tasteless as the first one. The dessert was the last straw: what they called cheesecake was just a mass of sour cream. Definitely a bad experience for us, I would never...

La comida: en cuanto a calidad/precio era muy buena y las raciones generosas. Probamos el menú para dos personas y sale bastante económico, lo único que cambiaría son las tapas de los entrantes. Las alubias y el consomé estaban deliciosas y entraban muy bien con el frío que hacía fuera, pero me sobraba un poco la ensaladilla de patata con torreznos, que aunque también estaba muy buena sumaba demasiados hidratos cuando después venía el chuletón con más patatas (yo huiese puesto en vez de eso una pequeña ensalada o unos encurtidos, algo más fresco que no llene tanto para coger la carne con más ganas). El chuletón estaba bueno, al punto que pedimos, nos lo comimos agusto. Tampoco os esperéis un chuletón de vaca vieja madurado 40 días por ese precio, pero la verdad es que estaba jugoso y con mucho sabor. En cuanto a la guarnición me atrevería a decir de que las patatas fritas eran congeladas, porque eran estas con forma de gofre pero aún así estaban buenas. Los postres si que eran caseros, pedimos la tarta de queso (brutal) y el sorbete de mandarina porque estabamos ya hasta arriba. Pedimos fuera de menú un café solo y una infusión, 2€ cada uno, lo cual me pareció un poco caro pero bueno, en total 30€ justos por persona.

El servicio: atentos y educados de principio a fin. A pesar de la carga de trabajo que tenían se les veía tranquilos y bien cordinados. Los tiempos bien medidos, sin esperas. Además tuvimos la suerte de poder sentarnos a comer sin reserva a los 10 minutos de espera, lo cuál se agradeció porque a esas horas tener mesa un sábado en un restaurante por los alrededores sin reserva resulta bastante complicado (aconsejo reservar con antelación).

El lugar: el restaurante se encuentra en un lugar emblemático junto a la catedral de Ávila, nada más traspasar la puerta de la muralla. Por dentro el ambiente es cálido y acojedor, con la típica combinación de paredes de piedra y techos de madera. Comimos en la planta baja y la verdad es que se estaba agusto, nada ruidoso. Lo único negativo a destacar por mi parte (también es algo muy personal) es la decoración. En sí el local prácticamente no necesita demasiados ornamentos por lo que comentaba al principio, pero nada más entrar te encuentras con una obra de arte que és literalmente un ataúd a tamaño real dónde la figura de un hombre moribundo se esta bañando en colillas de cigarrillos. Resulta bastante desagradable, por mi parte, encontrarse en un sitio así un cenicero gigante colgado de la pared con una persona medio muerta dentro. No fui capaz de relacionar el contexto con la obra, la verdad. Tampoco me pegaban demasiado las sillas con las mesas y con el resto del local. Como he dicho, esto es a gustos, pero creo que con muy poco se le podría dar muchísimo más encanto...
