Goiko Itturri Jatetxea — Restaurant in Astigarraga

I wish I could give no stars because zero is the appropriate rating for a restaurant where you can’t even try the food. I went at 14:30, which I realize is not lunch time here, but I’d taken an early train from Madrid and was very hungry. Also, they still had an hour before closing, so seemed fair. Then this happened: A couple walked in right before me; the host seated them immediately without comment. Then he came back, asked how big my party was, and when I said one he said no. Apparently they don’t serve parties of one without a reservation. Any other size of party, walk-ins welcome. But one person is too difficult to squeeze in.

Everyone in Barcelona and Madrid (and everywhere else) talks about how beautiful San Sebastian is, how amazing the food, how rich the traditions, how educated and cultured the people. I feel like I’ve entered the Twilight Zone. I’ve seen nothing but car dealerships and Soviet-looking tenement buildings for miles, and then this happens...I don’t even know what to say.

My advice to solo travelers (and everyone, really): go to Barcelona instead! It’s much faster to get to from pretty much everywhere; the food and wine and coffee are amazing (seriously, fantastic, and pretty cheap compared to every other major city I’ve been in); the art and architecture are beautiful; the people are exceptionally gracious; and you don’t need a magnifying glass to find the right place to go to have a great experience. I wish I’d just stayed there instead of coming to San Sebastian.

This is the only review I’ve ever written on here, and I know it will have no effect because I’m clearly an outlier. But some things...

Un 10, buena comida, buen sitio y mucho mucho mimo del que cada vez es más dificil encontrar a precios asequibles (o a cualquier precio).

Sopa de pescado+++, pochas con almejas, antxoas rebozada (en temporada), ventresca en temporada, impresionante solomillo… mis favoritos, pero para gustos colores.

Y si ya es en verano en la terracita que asoma a la fuente de Astigarraga mejor que mejor. Con niños viene genial tener la plaza peatonal y frontón en la entrada del restaurante, ahora nunca faltan las palas en nuestro maletero y cuando salimos a comer los chavales siempre quiere ir al Goiko. Aunque no sé si es por el frontón o por el jamoncito ese que se devoran en un abrir y cerrar de ojos..

Mientras otras modas pasan y muchos “blufs” donostiarras enseñan el plumero el Goikoiturri se consolida en nuestros estomagos y corazones.

Comer o cenar aquí siempre es un gusto.  Dá igual si es en pareja, en familia, con amigos, de celebración, de trabajo. . . Siempre que lo he recomendado ha sido un triunfo seguro. Y cuando he ido con gente de otros lugares y de buen comer, siempre ha sido más que un acierto. Por su cocina, por su carta y la frescura de sus materias primas, por el atento y amable servicio, por la relación calidad precio, por su terraza, por las carnes (el chuletón ... buenísimo para mi gusto) y pescados (rape y merluza mis preferidos) que puedes disfrutar, por la deliciosa sopa de pescado, las almejas , la ensalada templada de hongos... da igual que sea de carta o alguno de los menus para grupos... un gustazo. Cocina tradicional vasca de la buena y sabrosa, donde se disfruta y...
