Bar Mut, a tapas bar that should be avoided at all costs, has proven to be an absolute nightmare. My recent visit to this establishment was marred by the relentless attempts of the waiter to rob us of our table, the insatiable demands for exorbitant spending, and the aggressive response to a simple request to split the bill.
From the moment we entered Bar Mut, we were greeted with an air of hostility. The waiter, whose name I prefer not to mention, seemed determined to intimidate us into submission. He constantly hovered around our table, reminding us that we needed to order frequently to retain our spot. The pressure to spend an unreasonable amount of money every 30 minutes was not only outrageous but also completely unjustified.
Despite complying with their outrageous demands, the waiter's behavior only grew worse. He became increasingly confrontational, making us feel unwelcome and unworthy of the service we were paying for. It was as if our patronage meant nothing to him, and we were merely a means to extract as much money as possible.
When the time came to settle the bill and request a split, the waiter's aggression reached a disturbing level. His explosive reaction was nothing short of shocking, as he threatened us with violence and made a scene in front of other customers. This level of unprofessionalism and hostility is completely unacceptable in any establishment.
Regrettably, the food at Bar Mut failed to redeem the overall experience. The tapas dishes were lackluster, lacking creativity, and falling short in flavor. It was evident that the focus of this establishment was solely on monetary gain, neglecting the quality and enjoyment of the food itself.
In conclusion, I strongly advise against patronizing Bar Mut. The combination of a waiter who displays thieving tendencies, the oppressive atmosphere, and the aggressive response to a basic request for bill splitting create an appalling dining experience. Save yourself the trouble and seek out a tapas bar that values its customers and provides an enjoyable...
Read moreWe had a dinner for four. The restaurant has very limited space which is quite typical for BCN . We were seated in the terrace. The tapas are served by piece and even though the size of the tapa is small we liked it. Especially beef tartar and oysters. The main dish was a deception however, as we ordered paella and it came in a size of what you would normally get for one person in any other decent restaurant in Barcelona. To my kind question whether it was a normal portion for 4 people the waiter snapped that they only do half portions. So basically one person paellera size is for four people so their media portion is literally 1/4 of normal size. Even though we ordered all tapas from starter menu and a main dish we left hungry. They asked us to leave without offering coffee or dessert as the table was already booked ( there was empty space in the restaurant to seat new guests). The most unpleasant thing was that in the terrace the tables are really close to each other and people right next to us were smoking heavy cigars. The distance between the tables was less than a meter. I am allergic to smoke and kindly asked the waiter to seat us either inside or change tables. I was told he can’t help me as we are in the terrace and did absolutely NOTHING to address my request even when the table next to us freed up and we could be easily moved to it to be farther from the smoking crew. The restaurant is small, has 4-5 waiters but you still feel kinda abandoned. Also sad that having paid 300 euros for four of us we left the place hungry and had to go and look for another place to have a coffee of a dessert. The place looks nice on Instagram but the staff isn’t helpful, and the portions are tiny. Not worth...
Read moreThis was another of the highly recommended spots we tried in Barcelona, that ultimately did not impress.
The seafood is quite good, let's be very honest about that, but their getting fresh stuff like everyone else, so as long as they don't mess it up, it's going to be good. Everywhere we had seafood in Barcelona was excellent, so this place gets no kudos for doing it right.
The paella on the other hand - well, I guess someone should have mentioned this is not your typical paella. The rice is cooked in a very heavy, dark sauce, that it quite overpowering. To eat a bite of rice and fish, the rice is so strongly seasoned that it overpowers the fish. This is how they make all their paella's, it's not an accident.
Obviously there are people out there who like that flavor, but I can tell you that is was not pleasant for me. On top it all, the cost for the paella was around 50 Euro for the mussels and prawns, and 90 Euro for the prawns and scorpion fish.
A few days later we ordered paella from a small little cafe in the first plaza 400 meters NW of Bar Mut (Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia). Cannot remember the name of the cafe (not on Yelp - yet), but it was in the SW corner of the plaza, and they have outdoor seating for lunch and dinner (always busy, so you may have to wait).
Anyway, the paella at this little cafe in the plaza was light years better than Bar Mut's paella. The prawns were just as delicious, plus it included mussels, calamari and langoustine, and it cost only 15 euro.
Save your money and and walk a bit further up the road for some better paella. As for the rest of the place, it's not bad, it's just not all it's...
