We have sampled a fair bit of pinchos during our short stopover in Barcelona when stumbled upon a packed Casa Dorita one afternoon.
Surely, we have to try! We made a reservation for the first available dinner slot: 8 pm! By dinner, slow-cooked dishes like oxtail stew as well as chickpea and lobster stew, have sold out — probably to the lunch crowd hours earlier.
Well, well-cooked traditional Catalonian cuisine is absolutely divine. Casa Dorita is a beautiful but cozy family-owned Catalonian restaurant, — where no wait staff speak much English. With a deep respect for the love that goes into the pots, we opted for other stews and slow-cooked offerings — Iberian pork cheek (Carrillera Iberica €14.90) with black wine sauce and bean 🫘 stew (Pochas con fundament €11.20) — with a little help from Google translate. How could something seemingly simple as bean stew be one of the best stews I have ever had! What a burst of flavours! There isn’t a word to describe the complex layering of flavours: cannelloni beans with chorizo, black pudding (it seems), hints of peppers but whatever the combo — it would convert the most staunch carnivores! A spoonful in your mouth and everything slows down as its flavour unfolds in the mouth.
Though relatively small in portion, the pork cheek was soooo tender “one doesn’t need teeth” to savour it — in a black wine sauce that is reduced to perfection and simply out of this world! The Iberian pork potato croquettes turn to liquid gold in the mouth. As with all cuisines, it is those that take time that blow you away.
