Somodó — Restaurant in Barcelona

A lovely, intimate little restaurant in a quiet part of the city. I had actually booked a reservation here many many years ago when Somodo was still relatively young - but got sick and couldn’t make it. I’m glad I finally got to try it on my last trip in December. Set menu with 6 or 8 courses. I got the 8 courses at lunch.

One-man show in the kitchen serving a counter-ful of 6-8 diners. A chef’s table, if you will. Where you can see him finishing and plating every dish. Efficient, smooth, no wasted effort, a joy watching this chef at work.

Not overtly Japanese, but an elegant blend of French, Japanese and Catalan styles and ethos. Subtle, balanced beautifully, delicious. Portions were fair, and I left comfortably full. Fair price for the quality and quantity of food. Would definitely recommend, and will return. And I’ll try my best not to be late next...

The full menu is a 9 course meal which is both perfectly paced and designed to have flavour and texture contrasts within the dish and between each dish. It's so densely packed with flavour you'll feel sinful eating it, yet it's just enough food to be comfortably full if you come in hungry. The restaurant itself is humbly decorated and quiet, which allows the food to shine through. If 9 courses feels like too much (it really doesn't), there's a light menu as well that omits a few dishes. Either one will pair nicely with some good white wine, which the restaurant has at a very reasonable price. Speaking of price: neither menu is cheap. But for what you get it's an incredible value.
