As I stepped into this coffee shop, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee hit me like a freight train. I felt like I was in the heart of Colombia, and that's saying something, because I've been there. I was greeted by the barista who had a big smile on her face, like she knew a secret that I didn't. Little did she know, I had some secrets of my own.
The first sip of my coffee was like a gentle kiss from a mermaid, if mermaids were into coffee. It was smooth and full-bodied, with hints of chocolate and nutmeg. It was so good that I almost forgot I was in a coffee shop and not a five-star restaurant. But then I looked around and saw the minimalist decor and thought, "Well, at least they didn't spend all their money on furniture."
As I sat down to enjoy my coffee, I noticed a group of hipsters huddled in the corner. They were talking about some indie band that I've never heard of and sipping on lattes that were probably more expensive than my rent. I couldn't help but wonder, "Do they even know what coffee is supposed to taste like?" But then again, I'm not one to judge. After all, I once ate sheep testicles on the whim to experiment the culture of one of the British Isles.
Overall, this coffee shop exceeded my expectations. The coffee was top-notch, the atmosphere was hip and trendy, and the people-watching was top-notch. If you're looking for a place to get your caffeine fix and maybe overhear some slightly pretentious conversations, this is the spot for you. And if you're lucky, maybe you'll catch me there, sipping on a cortado and contemplating the mysteries of the universe, or maybe just wondering how someone can...
Read moreThe place actively promotes itself as a high-quality breakfast place and explains the extremely pricey items on the menu with the said quality.
We appreciated the attention to detail and the elaboration in the presentation of every dish. Nonetheless, we left the place having an impression that it was overpriced given the quantity, quality and, ultimately, the overall breakfast prices in Spain.
This was by far the most expensive breakfast that we had in a long time. Having eaten just yesterday night in one of the most famous restaurants of Bilbao and having paid 30€ for a wonderful main dish, it stroke us as an exaggeration that a toast of avocado (and a piece of tomato) and NOTHING else cost us half that dish this morning.
It was clear to us that we were paying for the esthetics and the concept but not just the quality of the meal.
In addition, the missing bits in the promised quality were: clearly undercooked pancakes (towards the middle, both pancakes were just the liquid oat mass), the absence of water served with the coffee (if I pay 4€ for a cappuccino, I do expect at least a glass of water to be served), the amount of time between the dish of my partner and mine were served (he finished his dish by the time I only received mine).
The place is beautiful and friendly and cozy and esthetic. It doesn’t however justify paying over 30€ for breakfast without the highest...
Read moreIt's a pretty small cafe and they mainly serve brunch and drinks. The seating is divided into two sections: outdoor and indoor; the outdoor seating is more comfortable, while the indoor seating is very crowded. The staff speaks fluent English, which is very rare.
It's right next to the Guggenheim Museum, so it feels like it's mainly for international tourists, which is probably why the staff is fluent in English. We saw on Google Maps that this was the only place in Bilbao that served cannelé, so we stopped by to try it.
We were actually a little disappointed because we paid the same price as the best cannelé in Madrid, but it was only average. The outer shell was not crispy and the inside did not have a distinctive rum and vanilla aroma. But maybe it's the only option here, hence the higher price. We also tried their lemonade, which was very refreshing and tasty.
One more thing, their seating arrangement was a bit confusing, we were told to stand by the sign at the door and wait for them to call us. We were told to stand by the sign at the door and wait for them to call us. However, we saw some other customers sitting right at the outside seats before they got to the line to order. We would come back for their brunch next time we...
