Café 4 Gatos — Restaurant in Granada

We were very excited to dine at the cafe; however, the dining experience is CATASTROPHIC. We only said “for party of two”, but the waitress was so annoyed (because we were Asian?). After we sit down and ready to order, we waited for 5-10 minutes until she FINALLY came. When I speak ENGLISH, she seems so frustrated and talked back in Spanish. I totally understand that we are in Spain and people could be uncomfortable to speak English. However, for things simple like order a dish, we should have no problem communicating. She did the following: 1. Ask me to point the menu and speak No.1 or 2. Apparently she can understand English, but trying to express that MY English that she COULDN’T or DOESN’T WILLING to understand. 2. I asked her to give an extra spoon, she refused so (later, another guy came back with a spoon) 3. I ordered (POINTED the menu) that we want toast with ham and cheese, she gave us tomato with cheese and refused to change it. 4. She talked out loud in Spanish about us with other customers. Even we could not understand Spanish, we can read their gestures. 5. After my friend feel uncomfortable about they talk at our back and pretend to video their conversation, she asked her colleague to chase us and asked us to delete the picture which we did not take. The place is a bit small so it is crowded..more like a tavern than a cafe, the cafe is located at a bit of the hilly part of the area, so if you are not fond of eating at an uneven ground, the inner side of the cafe would be more comfortable, however it is narrow and cannot fit a lot of people. But if you like the adventure of eating at uneven ground. There are lots of tables outside, plus you can enjoy the scenery too. The key word here is, don't be shy and don't be scared to share the tables with other customers. The host is friendly. He keeps on talking and entertaining the customers while making coffee or preparing drinks. He really makes the customers feel welcomed. He speaks good English too. The food is nice. The salmon slice toast with the cream cheese that I had was amazing. I had a bit of problem with my tummy the day before so I have to eat food that easily digestible. The salmon is the best choice. My husband ate the potato omelette toast and ordered a latte. We were literally full until 3pm, and equipped to explore albayzin after that. A good experience, nice environment. I sat down and accidently broke 3 coffee cups when my knee hit the table - not a good start. But the staff took this graciously and said not to worry about it.

The food: A good choice of foods if you are looking for breakfast, lunch or just for a little break from the busy streets. I had the pulled pork and cabbage sandwich as well as the cheesecake which was superb.

The drinks: Good coffee, tea and juice. I had the chai latte which was very nice.

Service: Service was very pleasant and spoke English well. Please keep in mind that you must go inside to order but they will bring the food to you.

Atmosphere: Great atmosphere as tourists, locals, and dogs walk by you. Please be careful as some of the tables don't balance very well due to the fact that they are on an incline - something that adds to the charm of the place.
