Read moreI recently visited Bucólico Café after hearing a lot of buzz around it. With a 4.8 rating, I expected a standout brunch experience - sadly, it didn’t quite live up to the hype.
Let’s start with the positives: the food was okay. Not bad by any means, but definitely not 4.8-star level. The menu offered the typical trendy brunch fare, and while the portions and presentation were decent, the flavors didn’t wow me. Prices were on the higher side, not outrageous, but certainly a bit steep compared to what you’d typically pay in Madrid for something similar.
The real issue, however, was the service. The staff’s behavior was surprisingly careless. Orders were taken with waiters literally leaning on the table, giving off an unprofessional vibe. What really shocked me was seeing them place cutlery directly onto the table GRABBING THEM BY THE HEAD, the part that goes into your mouth. That’s a basic hygiene lapse I wouldn’t expect even in a much more casual place.
I’ll spare the details about our seating situation, not ideal, but I understand places get busy. What left a bitter aftertaste was the interaction after we paid. As expected, a tip prompt popped up. When I chose 0% (which I felt was fair given the experience) we were given the look by staff, who, ironically, were visibly eating something while standing around the restaurant floor, in full view of guests. After more than a decade working in hospitality myself, I was honestly flabbergasted.
Bucólico Café might be a great Instagram spot, and I can see why it attracts crowds. But if you’re after genuine service and a brunch experience that matches the rating, you might want to...
Read moreCraving a brunch style start to the day, we found Bucólico Café on Google (4.8*) and headed off on a 15 min walk. Arriving we realised it was a) Saturday and B b) so well rated that we should have booked. Make sure you do! Having said that, less than 5 mins we were ushered inside to a seat on a bench and 2 mins later we had a seat at a table looking over the menu. Sign of a good menu is finding something you want, sign of a great menu is not being able to choose because it all sounds so good! We had the yoghurt with fresh berries, jam and almond flour and rosemary crumble (crumble was divine) and the eggs Benedict with red miso hollandaise and Sichuan pepper spiced oil. A really interesting flavour pairing that worked a treat and set me up for the day. Also, our dining neighbours scrambled eggs looked the bomb, foody envy was strong this morning! Coffees (Latte and Espresso) were best we'd had so far on our trip (2 weeks in Portugal and Spain) and as always, fresh squeezed juice in the heart of orange country is always delicious. And the staff; from the way we were greeted and seated to the service and the settling of the bill were exemplary examples of hospitality service. We were made to feel welcome, catered for in our lack of Spanish (we are always trying) and the friendliness of a chat after the meal without rushing us out left us not only with sated bellies but a lovely feeling of being made to feel totally welcome. A truly special...
