We stumbled upon La Cochinita Loca, which literally means the Little Crazy Piglet, just across the street from where we're staying in Madrid. This was some 20 minutes after arriving here from Bordeaux and on our way to the local market for provisions. My husband looked at me and said, "It's lunchtime, shall we?" We did. We too lived in CA and have been eating Mexican food since childhood in San Francisco in the Mission District, which is as authentic as it gets, and this place was just as good. My test to verify authenticity was this: "Do you make Micheladas? Do you have chamoy?" And next: "Do you make margaritas from scratch with a Tajin rim?" "Yes," was the owner's reply to both. And they were delicious and as spicy as my husband wanted his! We each had two. The owner's are a young couple with a five-month-old baby girl, running the place by themselves, at least today, June 19 at 1:30pm. We couldn't have been more delighted with the service! The guacamole was tasty as were the al pastor tacos. No, it wasn't Leo's Tacos from LA, and no, it's not a Michelin-starred restaurant, but they certainly were authentic! Our experience was worthy of an outstanding review!
Read moreAs a Mexican American, this place is absolutely terrible. I have traveled to Mexico dozens of times and in live California, so yes I have quite a couple things to say about the restaurant.
Greeted by terrible service, on their phones while you walk in. They do not make any Traditional Aguas frescos in house. Tortillas are industrially made, they lack all corn and flour tortillas a mexican is used to. Salsas, are not traditionally made, and are nothing you would ever find in a mexican restaurant. -Guacamole, has too much lime and tomato barely any avocado. All tacos appear to have a pickled onion that is not often used in mexico cooking and throws off the flavor. We order 10 dishes, and let me tell you those quesadillas used supermarket level grade tortillas and terrible cheese. Also ordered a huarache, and literally got a thin tortilla.
This place is beautiful inside but as a Mexican would give the food a 1/5, it may appeal to the market it is located. But does showcase our food’s deep culture that has won us a unesco. The reviews I believe are not accurate to the restaurant, bc there many other things I...
