In the contemporary backdrop of Palma, Mallorca, UrbanSushi presents an intriguing proposition with its Asian-fusion and sushi offerings.
The restaurant's interior, a modern homage to Japanese aesthetics, combines whites, pinks, and wood, setting a stark yet potentially inviting scene. However, my initial encounter was met with a sterile atmosphere, both in ambiance and initial staff interactions, an impression that gradually warmed up as the evening progressed.
The menu, though not extensive, promised a contemporary twist on sushi, including rolls with unconventional fillings like Philadelphia cheese, alongside other Asian staples like noodles. The selection process was straightforward, guided by a curiosity for the restaurant's fusion approach.
Our culinary journey commenced with Gyoza, which were exemplary, setting a high bar that the subsequent Tempura Prawns, unfortunately, did not meet due to overcooking.
My companions' noodle dish, despite its generous portion, failed to impress, echoing a sentiment of missed potential in flavor or presentation.
My choice of Salmon and Tuna Nigiri was reasonable, with both sushi pieces served at the correct temperature, a detail appreciated by any sushi aficionado. The accompanying wasabi was notably excellent, adding a much-needed zest to the dishes.
Dessert was a unanimous highlight, with each type of Mochi—Cheesecake, Oreo, Green Tea, and Mango—delivering on flavor and temperature, a sweet end to a mixed dining experience.
Service, initially perfunctory, improved noticeably as the evening wore on. This adjustment in service quality added a layer of warmth to what began as a somewhat cold interaction.
Reflecting on the entire experience, UrbanSushi didn't quite meet my high expectations for sushi cuisine, influenced by numerous outstanding experiences elsewhere. However, the enjoyment my friends derived from the meal reminds me of the subjective nature of dining out. What may fall flat for one can resonate deeply with others, a valuable insight into the diversity of palates and preferences.
UrbanSushi offers a unique take on Asian-fusion and sushi that may well appeal to those looking for a contemporary dining experience in Palma. While it may not have fully captivated my sushi-loving heart, the pleasant aspects of our meal—particularly the desserts and improved service—suggest that UrbanSushi holds a place in Palma's dining scene, especially for those open to its...
