Today around 3-4 p.m. I went with my husband to buy two ice creams in this ice cream shop. The waitress shouts something and I understand that it's my turn to go. As I know that not everyone speaks English in Tenerife, I tried to mix Spanish and English. The waitress didn't seem to understand, so I tried to order in English (I have a very good English, I've lived in London for a long time) seeing that the waitress was starting to get impatient, I asks her if she speaks English and she replies "no". The waitress started speaking vindictively in Spanish to her colleague to take care of us. What was my surprise then when the following customers began to speak English to her and within three minutes this same waitress acquired a level of English proficiency that allowed her to understand perfectly the following customers. Spoiler: I am mixed race and the following customers were not. So I complained at the second lovely waitress who spoke a very good English and who apologized for her colleague.
