If you're picturing yourself drinking cocktails through long straws with sparklers and fireworks blasting out of your cocktail then this is most definitely the place to go!
Set in the heart of the evening restaurant and bar scene, Mabu-Hay offers the ideal holiday cocktail, all served in ridiculous... I won't say glasses as ours was served in what could only be described as a fruit-laden island. However mad the drinking vessel, having a family sharing one was a really nice touch. The kids were all drinking the daily recommended alcohol-free version and we were drinking something similar with booze in it too. The clever "island" had different holes so that we could all enjoy drinking out of the same thing but separate compartments in it kept the booze way from the kids (much to their disappointment!).
Having a daily special made ordering easy. However, they did specific individual cocktails as well if you wanted to make sure nobody pinched your share. Prices as of summer 2016 were €5.50 for non-alcoholic and €6.50 each for boozy ones so they're not exactly cheap.
Our fruity boozy cocktail was delicious but I felt I could have drunk many islands worth to get to the staggering home point. Although I could taste the booze it felt much more like a drink you'd perhaps have on the way back from somewhere else where you've had a few cheaper drinks first.
Plonk an island or a parrot with a metre long brightly coloured straw and assorted fruits on cocktails sticks poking out of them in front of the kids with sparklers and a firework flare ruining your night vision and of course they're going to love it. What's not to love though with lots of fresh fruity flavours?
Location-wise, it's right in the centre of the main restaurant scene. Mini-golf next door and other bars around make this a really atmospheric setting.
If you walk past, be prepared to have your kids drag you over for a drink. If you've got teens, they'll love trying to poke their straws into your boozy compartments and you'll feel much less well off as a result, and still fairly sober. I could forgive the price if they were a bit more generous with the booze. I was tempted with 3 stars but it's just such a nice place to be on holiday so it redeemed itself a bit more because of that....
Read moreWent to have a cocktail with the family as it looked like an interesting atmosphere, we sat down at a table, had a quick look at the menu and the waiter came to get our order. The only person that had decided at the time was my son which wanted a mocktail the rest of us were still looking, so we told the waiter to order us the drink whilst we finished looking at the menu to which he very rudely snatched the menu off our hands and told us that he was not going to serve us for only one drink and to leave ( i fully understand that he might not want to have a table of 4 occupied for only one cocktail but the fact that we told him that we were still looking at the menu and he was as rude as you can get to paying customers is what has made me write this review). As you can imagine my 8 year old son was not happy after realising that we had been kicked out and he was not going to be able to get his mocktail, i have never been treated like this by any restaurant/ bar owner in my life by kicking us out...
Read moreWhere do I start, we very rudely get accused of stealing their glasses, when all of us had very small bag, owner bombarded us with other members off staff including a senior women who was very confrontational when we explained to her we he didn’t have the glass on us. After berating us for 10 minutes, telling us they weren’t stupid and knew we had it when in fact we didn’t, then proceed to slap me. On another note, they only had a men’s toilet as the women’s was locked and that toilet had no water and didn’t flush. The parrot also wasn’t there...
