Restaurante El Sitio — Restaurant in Tazacorte

My friend and me are food lovers. We live in London and frequent restaurants of various price ranges.

Of course, coming to La Palma is quiet different than London, but when we saw online that El Sitio is considered one of the best restaurants in town, we wanted to try it.

First, the waitress spoke no English. We asked for a table and were told that it was not possible. A few minutes later, the maître d’ hote found a table. The waitresses are too present during the service, standing near the table, topping up near-full glasses of water and watching you eat, trying to act like they are in a luxury restaurant, but are completely lost in their act.

Now, regarding the menu, it’s quite interesting. We ordered the guacamole as a starter, as La Palma is home to some of the best avocados; it was good but it lacked flavour. Then, I ordered the pork with pears; The pears were great, but the pork overcooked. My friend ordered the Filet Mignon from the maître d’ himself, but was never asked about the preferred doneness and was never brought a steak knife. The cut that arrived was tiny, around the 100g mark, without a sear on either side, just cheap grill marks, and beyond over cooked. The cut itself was no fillet, but likely a carved up piece of rump. He didn’t eat it and when the waitresses collected our plates, nobody asked why he hadn’t eaten anything. He was in such disbelief that he didn’t even bother to ask for a new one, as it was clear that whoever is in the kitchen had no clue what they were doing.

This is a pretend fine dining restaurant which displays a Michelin plaque at their front door, even though they are not included in the current Guide. They believe good service means wearing a suit, and good food means to have the highest prices around.

G r e a t food. We were offered to eat in tapas style downstairs or a la carte of the restaurant menu. Since the menu of the a la carte contained more vegetarian option we chose to eat from the a la carte menu. Since the weather was beautiful we were offered a place on the little garden terrace with nice parasols and flowers. The restaurant on the 1st floor looked amazing as well, but we preferred an outside place. Cava as an aperitif was a great start. Normally, the restaurants on La Palma serve drinks when you order food, but here they served it before we ordered something, which created a unconstrained sphere. The food (starter and main course) were amazing. A lot of freshness in the vegetables and dishes. You can really taste the pure flavors of every ingredient. Definitely worth the Michelin record. We loved it, the service, the bread, the wine, the ambiance, everything...

Wir lieben dieses Restaurant und ein Besuch ist ein Muss wenn wir auf der Insel sind. Das Ambiente und der Blick über die Bananenplantagen aufs Meer ist für uns immer ein kleines Erlebnis. Leider wurden wir bei unserem letzten Besuch bitter enttäuscht. Als erstes findet das Restaurant unsere Reservierung nicht, bestreiten sogar, das ich eine hätte. Als wir die Reservierungsbestätigung dann doch finden, sind die Tische leider schon voll und wir verschieben unsere Reservierung um eine Woche. Dies klappt auch ohne Probleme, wir werden nett begrüßt und bekommen eine kleine Aufmerksamkeit des Hauses. Und dann fängt das Desaster an. Die Menükarten sind in zwei verschiedenen Varianten vorhanden, wahrscheinlich wurden sie nicht auf den neuesten Stand gebracht. Die Vorspeisen benötigten über eine Stunde und waren von der Qualitativ sehr unterschiedlich, einige Speisen waren top, andere kalt und ungewürzt, sollten aber warm auf den Tisch kommen. Wasser zum Essen mussten wir uns selber nehmen, die Unterteller nach der Vorspeise wurden bei einigen entfernt, bei anderen wurden die krümeligen ölverschmierten Teller einfach stehen gelassen. Der Wein zum Hauptgang kam an den Tisch, der Kellner wollte ihn in die vorher benutzten Sektgläser einfüllen, nach unserem Protest tauschte er sie gegen Weingläser aus. Was soll ich sagen, der Wein hatte Kork mit im Glas, den Schluck schüttete der Kellner weg und erzählte uns dann, das wäre die einzige Flasche, wir waren zu sechst, aber wenn wir noch etwas trinken möchten, es gäbe noch eine angefangene mit vielleicht 3 Gläsern. Warum um Himmels Willen teilt er uns das nicht vorher mit, bevor er die Flasche eingießt. Unfassbarer Service. Und es geht noch weiter… Ein Hauptgericht gab es gar nicht, dies wurde uns erst nach der Vorspeise erklärt, die Hauptspeisen waren durchweg kalt, nicht lauwarm, kalt! Und eine Hauptspeise kam gefühlt 10 Minuten später, es wurden erst die anderen Tische bedient. Ich könnte hier wahrscheinlich noch ewig weiterschreiben, der Abend war einfach eine riesige Enttäuschung und ich hoffe für dieses tolle Restaurant das sie diese ganzen Baustellen in den...
