Mercabanyal — Restaurant in Valencia

Really disappointed by the service here today. We travelled right across Valencia to come for the Menu del Día which is advertised on the website. We scan the QR code which brings up the Menu del Día and choose what we want to order then ask at the restaurant how to do it. They send us to the front desk who tell us that they are no longer doing the menu. We explained that we have travelled across the city specifically for this deal and that it still shows up on both their website and the QR code on the tables. We even pointed to a sign they still had on display showing the menu del Día as available. They continued to refuse to serve it to us, even though the restaurants were still willing to provide the deal. The way the waitress spoke to us was also incredibly rude, as though she thought we were stupid, because our Spanish wasn't completely fluent (even though she could understand us perfectly fine). I've been living here for a number of years and have been looking forward to trying Mercabanyal for ages, so we waited until we had family visiting and brought them for a special treat. I don't really understand the high rating of this place. The drinks are of poor quality (our sangría was a bottle of tinto de verano mixed with a shot of rum and the cocktails taste like sugary water. The food was also mediocre. The croquetas selection was quite small for the price (10 eur) it was slightly burned and was very mild in flavour - could barely tell apart which flavours we tasted. We also had 2 baos which were not warm enough, the pulled pork was okay but the mani sweet chili was just bad - it was a mush of tasteless peanut sauce and vegan chicken(?). Don't recommend. The waffles fries were okay but they only had ketchup to go with it no other sauce options. Service at the bar was quite slow, hence the 3 stars. Atmosphere was quite nice and chill but the toilets were not in a good state, and were dirty. Overall, there are nicer places...

This is a great place to eat, lots of choices from different vendors (all established chains I think - you can take that as good or bad)

Lots of good experiences here, there's just two things wrong.

1. The toilets are awful. I think they are deliberately dark so you can't see how truly bad they are. I can't speak for the women's but in the men's you are just wading through p*ss.

2. from my experiences so far, all of the traders give you plastic cutlery. In 2024 - really?? I'm sure if you ask they will give you the line about how it gets recycled but the fact is only around 10% of plastic does - you can be pretty sure they are lying but even if not, why not use a sustainable alternative. Even McDonald's gives wooden cutlery now and they really hate the environment!

Please get rid of the plastics, there's just no need...
