Taberna El Grau — Restaurant in Valencia

My experience at El Grau was unfortunately quite disappointing, especially considering the positive reviews I had read. While I appreciated that a 7:30 PM reservation was available (perhaps catering to an earlier dining preference), the welcome upon arrival was less than inviting. The server I encountered seemed quite unwelcoming, and a smile or a more attentive demeanor would have significantly improved the initial impression. The starter, the esgarraet, was enjoyable and a highlight of the meal. However, the main course, the Paella Valenciana, was a significant letdown. The rice was unfortunately burnt, and the rabbit was undercooked. Overall, the meal did not meet my expectations based on the prior positive feedback. I visited this tavern with friends, and we were pleasantly surprised! Everything about this place delighted us. The prices here are much friendlier compared to the centre of the city. The food is simply good, with very generous portions - for example, a serving of meat with potatoes is enough for two. Cocktails are delicious and reasonably priced as well. The interior is interesting, styled like a market square. The atmosphere is pleasant, making it a great place to hang out with friends or family. We'll definitely come back and bring more friends along, especially since we live just 10 minutes away from...

We discovered this restaurant by accident. Initial impressions were good, especially the box of very large heirloom tomatoes next to our table. So we looked for the tomato burrata salad on the menu but unfortunately, there was no burata available so we settled for another tomato tuna salad which was delicious.

A dimming of the bright lighting coupled with updating both the music and sound system (sound like it was being played through a transistor radio), would vastly improve the ambience.
