UNHYGIENIC- BEWARE!!!
Went at lunch time in Kandy for Black curry (3/5), an iced tea, and a lime soda, totalling 3050. We got seated on the balcony, as foreigners often are. The table was very (and I mean very...very) sticky, but that is somewhat minor. I saw right away something was off with the drinks and was horrified to realise the straws had been reused. You can clearly tell, as they had not even cleaned them properly. PHOTOS ATTACHED.
This is a restaurant chain. There is absolutely no excuse for this disgusting behaviour when other, much smaller places, even offer paper ones. There is another option if you dont want to buy: just don't give people straws.
If they reuse something as simple as a cheap, throwaway plastic straw... what else are they throwing back into circulation? Leftover chicken from someone else? Will someone else receive the paratha I left? I find the thought revolting.
To make matters worse, as other comments said, the waiter pressured for a tip. EVEN AFTER I SAID WHAT WAS WRONG.
Stay away. There are much better places in kandy (i.e.,...
Read moreWe just walked out after having a dinner at this restaurant. We ordered food, 20 minutes into it we were told that our meal would be ready 30 minutes later. I still had not been served my papaya juice till after this when I brought it up. When asked if they could give us even a bread to snack on till we wait, one of the servers said “NO” and everytime we tried to ask for update, they would avert their eyes and walk away from us. When food arrived it came with a wrong order. We had ordered 2 paratha and side of pol roti. When only pol roti arrived we let them know we did not get parathas we ordered, they were served to us 15 minutes later. After finishing the meal when we went up to pay the bill came with additional price for “additional serivng” of pol roti. And when asked for clarification as to why we were charged when it was their mistake they brushed it off with a “yeah yeah yeah” rather than accountability. The meal was decent, bit salty but decent. The service on the other hand is a big pile of corner...

We visited Cafe 1886 during our trip to Kandy after reading online reviews. My wife had the crab curry which was surprisingly good and I had the mutton curry which was also very good. We also shared a seafood platter which had a crab, maybe a couple of prawns and then some chicken and two sausages - you read that right. The seafood platter was disappointing to say the least . There was a lot more meat than seafood and the crab or prawns were average.
The whole place is quite tired and probably resembles a not so popular British pub. The day we visited - Saturday evening - the main road outside the pub smelled like garbage . Maybe some trash left our for a long time but you feel like throwing up after some time. Hopefully our table was not close to the windows.
To put it simply - if you can stick to the curries, don't care about the ambience and have no sense of smell then it's a great place to...
