88 Chinese Restaurant — Restaurant in Colombo

As I’m writing this review, I’m finding it difficult to remember any highlight of the meal, mainly because there was NONE !!

The food was mediocre AT BEST, and the flavours purported on the menu did not prevail in any of the dishes. After ordering a vegetable, beef, cuttlefish, fish, crab and prawn fried rice ; these are some of my grievances about the food.

-the vegetable stir fry was so underwhelming, no variety in the vegetables.

-the Singapore Chilli crab was tiny! with barely any meat on the crab…a waste of $5,700 rupees in my opinion!

-when I first saw the “prawn” fried rice, I thought that their had been some mistake in placing my order because I couldn’t seem to spot any prawn present in the rice. When I ate the rice, it tasted exactly like a vegetable fried rice.

-all of the dishes portions were small (even though I ordered large for majority of the dishes).

My suggestion : you can find tastier, more authentic places. The standards have dropped significantly from the last time I was here, now the food is tolerable (at best). I find it incredibly hard to believe that others are raving about the food in the posts below me because it all felt so disappointing and lacking in some way or another. Please don't fall for online rating and order. It's going to be a waste of your money. I ordered 2 fried rice pacs along with hot butter cuttlefish through Ubereats. Non of the potions were up-to standard in taste or quality. They have provided a tiny amount of chilli paste for both pacs and no taste of egg or chicken in the rice. Hot butter cuttle fish didn't have its essence either. I mean I spent about 7k on this meal and all I get is tasteless food. At this point I dont mind paying more if the meals have some form of taste. I have my usual place yet I wanted to try a new place and I ordered and it was a waste of my money. Really enjoyed the food and service the other night at 88. The atmosphere is pleasant enough and gives that classic Chinese restaurant feel. The food came quickly and was cooked exceptionally. We ordered the following: Cucumber salad (a must get!) Fried Wontons Beef with ginger and spring onion ( the beef was so tender and the ginger really stood out) Szechuan chicken - really nice dish, the sauce was amazing, and the addition of the peanuts was a nice touch Mixed combination of vegetables Chef's special friend prawns - really tasty and love the cumin seeds in it! 3x steamed rice.

Will definitely be going back and getting some more specials and authentic dishes. Thank you 88 team! (wish I had photos, but we just couldn't resist and devoured the meal before time...
